2 Course/Module description: The course will focus on the personal, social and cultural determinants on individual's and group's health behavior. Psycho-social models and theories on health behavior change and modification will be reviewed. Applied processes of planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs for individuals and society will be presented. Course/Module aims: To introduce and promote an understanding of the theoretical background and methodologies of health promotion, such that students will understand human health behavior and ways in programs can be planned and developed. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - To describe and evaluate the determinants influencing individual health behavior, and to explain health promoting and health compromising/risk behavior. - To identify and to articulate basic concepts in health education and promotion, such as: improving individual health skills, health literacy, social marketing, empowerment, social support, etc. - To describe and to compare models and theories of health behavior change with regard to the individual, inter-personal, community and the public at large. - To articulate and to plan methods of behavior modification on the individual, interpersonal and community levels (counseling, instruction, persuasion, social marketing) - To develop and plan an intervention program for behavior change Attendance requirements(%): Participation is mandatory absence is permissible for up to 2 classes. Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lecture-discussion -Exercise Course/Module Content: Introduction, explanation of course goals and requirements; Basic concepts regarding the determinants of health behavior and health behavior change; survey results on health behavior in Israel, as a basis for developing policy page 2 / 6

3 for health education and promotion. Theories of health behavior change on the individual, inter-personal and community level. The Health Belief Model, Trans-theoretical Model (Stages of Change), Motivational Interviewing for individual behavior change, The theory of Planned Behavior, Health Literacy, empowerment and health promotion, cultural appropriateness in health promotion programing, the ecological model of behavior change, Social Learning Theory, diffusion of innovation, social marketing, health promoting policy, program and intervention development using the Precede-Proceed Model, the Positive Deviant Model, Action-Participatory Research Model for planning and implementation, evaluation in intervention programs for health promotion understanding the methods and when to apply them.
