3 LESSON 1: OUR HEALTH, EXPECTATIONS & PERCEPTIONS CLASSWORK ASSIGNMENT DIRECTIONS: On the page that follows, you will find space to compose four short/answer essays. Use the appropriate space for each now Follow the steps below to compose your brilliant first day short/answer essays! (Your teacher will be so impressed that they may just give you bonus points... or not??) ESSAY 1: (10 minutes) 1) Think for a minute about the total health of each individual in our country or lack thereof and our health care crisis 2) Next, contemplate that freedom is a basic concept of our country and therefore, all of us have the right to make certain choices choices that essentially allow for us to do what we choose as long as those choices do not take away the rights or freedoms of others to some these rights include drinking to excess, smoking, stealing, speeding, etc., because they believe they are not hurting you through such behaviors. 3) Considering points one and two, what do you believe is the personal responsibility of each citizen with regards to their own personal health in our country? ESSAY 2: (8 minutes) 1) Video Short Answer Reflection: Your teacher will show you a short video. Follow the steps below to compose your brilliant short answer reflection after the video! a. Watch the Video: The Time You Have in Jelly Beans (2:45 minutes) b. While watching, listen very carefully to the narrator as you watch what he and his partner are creating/moving/removing c. At the end of the movie, contemplate how this information may change he choices you make in your daily life. Now, read and respond in a short answer/essay to the following questions again, you need not reply in order, but please be sure to write in paragraph/essay form. i. What does this video make you realize about your life and the choices you make each day? ii. How is your personal health & wellness related to how you spend your Jelly Beans? iii. How is your performance at school directly related to how you spend your Jelly Beans? iv. Did you know the Nurses Office has Jelly Beans? Coincidence? ESSAY 3: (6 minutes) 1) Video Short Answer Reflection: Your teacher will show you a short video. Follow the steps below to compose your brilliant short answer reflection after the video! a. Watch the Video: Lost Generation (2:02 Minutes) b. While watching, listen very carefully to the narrator as you watch the words on the screen pay special attention to the order in which the words are viewed as well as the direction the words are flowing. c. At the end of the movie, contemplate how this information may change he choices you make in your daily life. Now, read and respond in a short answer/essay to the following questions again, you need not reply in order, but please be sure to write in paragraph/essay form. i. What does this video make you realize about the power of your generation to start making positive change right now? ii. What does this video make you feel you can personally contribute to our society? iii. What role does your total health have on your ability to make those contributions to our society? ESSAY 4: (10 minutes) 1) Video Short Answer Reflection: Your teacher will show you a short video. Follow the steps below to compose your brilliant short answer reflection after the video! a. Watch the Video: Nick Vujicic (4:12 Minutes) b. Comment on Nick s level of health and wellness with respect to each of the following: i. His physical health ii. His mental/emotional health iii. Your teacher will collect this page only at the end of the class if you have finished. If your teacher gives additional time, be sure to hand it in by the designated deadline for on time credit. 7 LESSON 2A: THE HEALTH TRIANGLE NAME PERIOD DIAGRAM THE TOTAL HEALTH TRIANGLE TOTAL HEALTH HEALTH TRIANGLE FACTS: What type of triangle is The Health Triangle? What are the labels we apply to each side of the triangle? Explain the correlation between the three sides of the triangle. In other words, what happens to total health if one side of the triangle is unhealthy? HEALTH TRIANGLE ANALYSIS: Analyze your Health Triangle by completing the Personal Triangle Analysis Worksheet on the reverse side of this page. After completing the worksheet, summarize your findings in the space below being sure to include your strengths, weaknesses and goals for your triangle. 7
8 Personal Triangle Analysis Worksheet NAME PERIOD Instructions: For each question that follows, answer as honestly as possible by circling yes or no. Your teacher will use power point slides to clarify each question as you proceed through the analysis. PHYSICAL HEALTH: 1 Yes No I get at least 8 hours of sleep each night 2 Yes No I eat a well-balanced diet, including a healthful breakfast each day 3 Yes No I practice good hygiene 4 Yes No I participate in minutes of moderate physical activity each day 5 Yes No I avoid using tobacco, alcohol and other drugs 6 Yes No I drink 8 cups (64oz. or ½ gal) of water each day MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH: 1 Yes No I generally feel good about myself, accept who I am and have a positive outlook on life. 2 Yes No I express my feelings clearly and calmly, even when I am angry or sad - that is, I express my emotions in appropriate ways. 3 Yes No I accept responsibility for my actions and am willing to accept helpful criticism. 4 Yes No I enjoy challenges and activities that help me grow 5 Yes No I have an appropriate sense of control over my life 6 Yes No I am usually able to deal with life s stresses and frustrations in a positive manner 7 Yes No I make thoughtful & responsible decisions SOCIAL HEALTH: 1 Yes No I have a few special people in my life with whom I can share my thoughts and feelings 2 Yes No I demonstrate respect and care for myself, family and others 3 Yes No I work hard to maintain healthy relationships 4 Yes No I am a good listener 5 Yes No I seek and lend support when needed 6 Yes No I am able to clearly communicate my thoughts and feelings to others especially when asked to do something that could be harmful or wrong 8
9 LESSON 2B: THE WELLNESS CONTINUUM NAME PERIOD DIAGRAM THE WELLNESS CONTINUUM BELOW: 1 Remembering back to the video of Nic Vujicic, No Arms, No Legs, No Worries, use the diagram above to place an X where you believe Nick falls on the Wellness Continuum. Now, place your initials where you believe you fall on the continuum. Explain why you placed each mark where you did. 2 We may say one characteristic of Nick s is that he is resilient. What is resiliency and why would it be important with regards to The Wellness Continuum. 3 How does one develop resiliency? Are you resilient?
