14 Overcoming fear: How together we can turn fear into courage! Solidarity is the strongest basis for courage! Swedish survey carried out in 5 countries: Trade union members can deal with job insecurity signifcantly better than non-members: They trust their combined force and see their own strengths. They have learned through experience that through their actions they can influence their own lives. The more people become involved in shaping their own destiny the better they learn how to cope with their fears. A good collegial atmosphere and trade union solidarity are the best antidotes to fear!

Discovering similarities - Helping workers to understand how to defend their own interests: Providing competent support and encouraging workers to act independently; Getting workers to participate in negotiations; Actively dealing with problems and conflicts instils courage. Just standing back and observing, or waiting for something to happen, tends to increase fear. The first step towards action is the most important ingredient for developing courage!
