(12) Interpretation A From the Norman Conquest by Marc Morris, 2016 By 1064, Harold and his brother reigned supreme, whereas the authority of Edward the Confessor had been eroded to virtually nothing. It stretches credibility to believe that the King, aged and powerless as he was, could have commanded the earl to do anything that would damage his own interests, let alone help to revive a scheme for the succession to which he has always opposed.

10 Norman Conquest Common question topic 4 Conquest 7. Interpretations B and C both focus on the function of Norman castles. How far do they differ and what might explain any differences? 12 marks. The fact that they were often sited to command road and river routes, for example, meant that their owners were also well placed to control trade, and could both protect and exploit mercantile traffic. We are reminded, too, that part of the reason for building a castle could be symbolic. A great fortress, towering above everything else for miles around, provided a constant physical reminder of its owner s power a permanent assertion of his right to rule. 11 Interpretations A and B both focus on the Domesday Book. How far do they differ and what might explain any differences? (12) Interpretation A The structure of Domesday Book does make it an extraordinarily effective instrument of political control. Its tables of contents and numbered headings imply that all land was held either directly by the king or from him by tenants-in-chief. It therefore enshrines a radically new political principle that lay at the heart of the Conqueror s regime: that the king claimed to be the source of all tenure (land and titles). Armed with Domesday Book, King William could threaten to dispossess an uncooperative baron in a matter of minutes. It is not hard to see how that would have brought comfort to a king who needed baronial loyalty more than ever. An extract from an article for the BBC History magazine, by Stephen Baxter, a medieval historian. Interpretation B In December 1085, William met his Great Council (a team of advisors) in Gloucester. At the meeting William decided to order a survey. It would list all the landowners and their tenants and the lands they held. It would describe any other people who lived on the land from villagers to slaves. It would describe how the land was used, if it was used for woodland, meadow or animals. All buildings such as castles, churches or mills were to be recorded. The survey would show William the wealth of his kingdom. Importantly for him, William could find out how much money he could raise in taxes from his people. This survey resulted in Domesday Book. In their 1992 book, Timber Castles, Higham and Barker suggested that the wooden castles built by the Normans were also often designed to show the status of their owners. How far do you agree? 7. The book s author, Harriet Harvey Wood, argues that the late Anglo-Saxon period in English history was wonderful and astonishing. How far do you agree? 10.
