What If... We have all heard the axiom that up to 90% of success in sports is mental. What if there was a simple test you could give athletes that would reveal exactly what s going on in their head and heart? In other words, it could tell you how they think, how they will respond to situations and how they are expected to behave and even mentally perform during competition. What if that test could also tell you how to most effectively coach (or parent) and develop them to reach their full potential. And, what if that same test could tell you the same about a team as a whole? Too good to be true? Well...no. The test exists. It is the Troutwine Athletic Profile or TAP for short. It has been used by the pros for decades. Powerhouse teams like the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Royals have been using it to scientifically select and coach their players for the mental game...racking up championship trophies in the process. Now, for the first time, you can too. Game. Changer. The owners of the company that provides the TAP recently decided to share the TAP with all of amateur sports through the recently developed online AthleteTypes System. Dominate the Mental Game with AthleteTypes Our mission with AthleteTypes is to deliver powerful, easy-to-use sports psychology tools and mental skills training to boost the success and well-being of every athlete, coach, and team, across the globe. To improve an athlete s mental game, you first need a baseline. Even better, an objective way to measure, compare to peers, and track progress. With AthleteTypes, it all starts with the the Troutwine Athletic Profile (TAP), an athletic mindset indicator that scientifically measures the mental intangibles related to athletic and personal success. From a simple 25-minute online assessment, we are able to accurately measure over 100 mental intangibles. Once the TAP is completed, output in the form of reports and development plans are instantly available for improving both individual and team mental performance. This information leads to building champions. 2

TAP History Dr. Robert Troutwine first developed the TAP in the 1980 s to help NFL teams identify players with the critical mental intangibles believed to predict success. Since then, the TAP has a three decade record of success in player personnel evaluation with leading teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA and the US Department of Defense -- winning over 100 championships in the process. The TAP and AthleteTypes System has many success stories including: TAP used by NFL Hall-of-Famer Bill Polian to build rosters at his various teams including the Indianapolis Colts for their Super Bowls and Championship. The TAP and Dr. Troutwine famously helped the Colts choose Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf in 1998 NFL draft. TAP used to build New England Patriots rosters during entire tenure of Bill Belichick including providing insights to the Patriots as to Tom Brady s strong mental intangibles in 2000 NFL draft. TAP used to build roster of 2015 World Series champion Kansas City Royals specifically targeting players that scored high in mental toughness. 3

How Does the TAP Work? The TAP is taken online and is best completed on a computer or larger screen tablet/phone with a strong Internet connection. The TAP includes around 100 questions and one timed exercise. It usually takes minutes to complete. AthleteTypes offers its proprietary Troutwine Athletic Profile (TAP) assessment to measure the mental intangibles important to success. The TAP is the gold standard for athletic mindset assessment with 30+ years of science and research in its continual development. The TAP database of elite athletes is the largest on the planet! The TAP is now at the core of the revolutionary AthleteTypes System. 4

AthleteTypes System In 2017, Dr. Troutwine co-founded AthleteTypes, combining the TAP with a predictive analytics technology platform to develop The ground-breaking AthleteTypes System an end-to-end online system for assessing, coaching, and developing athletes for peak mental performance in athletics, school and life. Now, the TAP and AthleteTypes system are available to all of amateur sports including individual athletes, teams and athletic departments. The core system is offered free of charge to help fulfill our mission to help all athletes, coaches and teams elevate their mental game. The remainder of this document will focus on the core measurables of the TAP assessment. Before digging into those, here is an image of the AthleteTypes System components and how they work together: HOW IT WORKS 5

What are the Mental Intangibles measured? Traditionally, one of the biggest challenges with evaluating athletes on their mental game is the lack of objective standards. When you are dealing with something most coaches consider as intangibles, by definition there is no way to objectively measure them. The TAP changes that thinking. With more than 30 years of research analyzing the TAP results of elite athletes, the TAP has been fine-tuned to accurately measure the mental intangibles important to success in athletics. This process involved Dr. Troutwine leveraging the evaluation protocols used by one of the most notable athletic events in the world, the NFL Combine and those used by one of the most elite special forces military units in the world, the US Navy SEALs. The result of this research and analysis allowed AthleteTypes to turn traditional mental intangibles into tangible, objective metrics that can be used for evaluation and comparison of athletes across all sports and levels of competition. The image below displays the hierarchy of the TAP Performance Traits. At the top, there is an Overall TAP Score, followed by the three pillar TAP Performance Traits: Mental Toughness, Coachability, and Mental Performance. Below those, are the Growth Traits that partially make up the formula for the TAP Performance Traits, along with some foundational traits that you will see in smaller letters at the base of the pyramid. Our first instinct would think that the higher the score in every category would be better. It is rare that an individual will score high in all 12 TAP Performance Traits. Of course, just like there are athletic freaks that are great overall athletes and excel at nearly sport or position they play, there are mental freaks that score high across the board on the TAP. However, research has found that a mix in scoring on the TAP Performance Traits often produces better balance and overall performance in an athlete. In fact, a high score in one of the performance traits is not always good, particularly when looking from the lens of a single sport or position. For example, an analysis of NFL coach (e.g., Bill Belichick and others) ratings of individual NFL players showed the coaches unknowingly prefered offensive lineman that score low in Confidence. Unpacking this a little we discovered that offensive lineman are supposed to work cohesively as a group, preferably deferring to the needs of the group over themselves. In other words, if they try to stand out or pursue self interests, that disrupts the cohesiveness of the group which is paramount in protecting the quarterback. Our analytics showed players with lower Confidence scores, behaved in this preferred deferential manner. 6

Overall TAP Score The Overall TAP Score is exactly what you are thinking. A single, objective metric that evaluates the overall athletic mindset and mental game of an athlete. This score is only available to our professional sports teams or other elite clients. Mental Toughness Mental Toughness measures one's determination, competitive spirit and ability to persevere in challenging situations. The champion-level mental toughness we measure A.L.W.A.Y.S begins with intense desire (Competitive Desire) matched with a knowing that it can be achieved (Confidence) plus a commitment to doing what needs to doing what need to be done to make it happen Every. Single. Day. (Military Combat). There are other secret sauce components from the Foundational Traits that make up the overall Mental Toughness grade. Mental Toughness is arguably the most important of the 12 TAP Performance Traits. Military Combat Derives from years of research of TAP results with battle seasoned Navy SEALs, special ops forces, decorated combat warriors and elite soldiers who endured the most grueling combat training & missions. Measures one s resilience, grit and readiness to accept whatever the situation brings. Competitive Desire Dr. Troutwine defines competitive desire as: Drive to Achieve + Intrinsic Motivation + Competitiveness. A High score in competitive desire means that you re going to be focused pushing hard. And Winning. Confidence Measures one s propensity to naturally exhibit confidence as it relates to the situations one faces in competition or in life generally. The higher the score, the more one will exhibit a take charge style be secure with themselves and in their own decisions. A lower score in confidence may reflect a preference for the security of deciding things as a group or deferring to others. Coachability Coachability measures one's ability, openness and likelihood of responding to outside coaching and then the ability to apply the coaching in practice and competition. The champion-level coachability we measure A.L.W.A.Y.S begins with one s ability to grasp concepts (Learning Aptitude) matched with the ability to pay attention and get things done (Attention to Detail) plus the propensity to be realistic and take a hands-on approach to instructions (Practicality). There are other secret sauce components from the Foundational Traits that make up the overall Coachability grade. Learning Aptitude Scoring derives from the questions on the TAP that have right and wrong answers. These questions measure an individual s natural learning aptitude in three areas: Numbers, Pictures and Verbal. The higher the score, the higher learning aptitude of the individual -- in athletic competition and in life. Attention to Detail Measures the individual s ability to naturally desire to pay attention to details and generally get things done. The higher the score, the higher attention to detail and execution that can be expected from the individual. Practicality Measures one s propensity for being realistic, practical or hands-on in their approach to situations and problems. The higher the score, the higher level of practical and realistic choices and decisions that can be expected from the individual. Individuals that score lower in practicality tend to be more abstract, creative or think outside the box, they may find it harder to focus on the here and now. 7

Mental Performance Mental Performance measures one's ability to mentally perform at high and consistent levels during athletic competition. The champion-level mental performance we measure A.L.W.A.Y.S begins with one s ability to make appropriate split-second reactions to situations (Speed Concentration) matched with the ability to make good decisions quickly (Decisiveness) plus the propensity to be emotionally stable and steady during competition (Composure). There are other secret sauce components from the Foundational Traits that make up the overall Mental Performance score. Speed Concentration Measures one s mental reaction time and accuracy in choosing the appropriate response when provided interfering and conflicting stimuli. The Stroop effect from the military measured in this scale translates well to athletic competition as in most sports the ability to quickly read and respond to what is happening on the field/court is important to success. Decisiveness Measures one s natural ability to make quick decisions. This is important for athletic competitions and particular sport positions that require quick, important decisions most commonly found in dynamic, fast-moving sports. The higher the score, the more likely one is to naturally make quick decisions without hesitation in competition. A lower score in Decisiveness may reflect a preference for deliberate and cautious decisions, sometimes to the point of being hesitant. Composure Measures emotional maturity, emotional stability and maintaining a positive outlook. The higher the score, the more even tempered the athlete will be, and the more consistent their performance, especially in the face of setbacks or difficulty. A lower score in composure may reflect a tendency to be more easily knocked off their game reducing consistency and a focus on the high emotions around them. Can Athletes Improve on the TAP Performance Traits? In a word: YES! This is why we developed the MENTAL GYM!! The mental gym is an online learning & development system designed to teach athletes and coaches MENTAL SKILLS and positive HABITS to increase their propensity for success in their sport and life. We have designed a number of skill and habit workouts to correspond directly to the TAP Performance Traits to help athletes improve these metrics. Unrealized Potential in Athletes A story all-too-common is that of the superiorly gifted athlete, with all the natural talent in the world, that fails to reach his or her full potential due to one thing or another. Can you think of one or two? Probably even more. You probably know of some first hand. The real tragedy is that most of these stories didn t need to end up that way. This is because the overwhelming cause of athletes failing to reach their full potential is due to a weakness in their mental game. This is not only true for the story of the gifted athlete, but all athletes that fail to reach their full potential. It is usually their mental game that holds them back. Until now. 8

Introducing The Mental Gym Introducing the all new, award-winning, Mental Gym from AthleteTypes. The Mental Gym is where athletes systematically develop the mental skills & habits that lead to success in athletics, school, and life. Let s say that again. Systematically develop the mental skills & habits that lead to success. Sound too good to be true? Please read on. How Does the Mental Gym Work? Choose a Workout The system automatically recommends a customized list of online workouts that address each athlete s top opportunities for improvement. Or, browse the vast library of 100+ workouts to address a specific need. 2 Types of Workouts Skills - Learn mental skills to elevate one s mental game. If the skill involves a specific technique, the system will guide the athlete to practice and sharpen the technique daily for one week. Habits - Develop positive habits to improve one s performance, overall success, and quality of life. The habit workout encompasses 28-days including 4 lessons and daily repetitions to hone the habit. 9

Daily Interactions For workouts that develop a new technique or habit, the system digitally interacts with an athlete daily to coordinate that day s repetition to hone the new behavior. Sample Workout Details The chart below describes three sample workouts: 10

Reporting Guidance Guidance is the form of reports is available from the AthleteTypes System. There are reports designed for each stakeholder in an athlete s development: The Athlete, the Parent(s), and the Coach(es). There are also team reports and guidance for coaches using the team edition of AthleteTypes. 11

A statistical analysis was conducted on the TAP results of over 30,000 special forces soldiers & elite athletes, both male and female, in nearly all sports. At a broad level the data revealed a constellation of mental characteristics that clustered into 8 types that share common athletic mindsets, traits, strengths, weaknesses, and most-effective interaction styles. We gave them catchy names so they are easily remembered. 13

A great feature of the Athlete Types is that because the TAP has widespread use in professional sports, especially football and baseball, we are able to list prominent professional athletes of each Athlete Type. See examples below: The matched Athlete Type is the first thing an athlete sees after completing the TAP. This important first impression is purpose-built to be a positive introduction to the athlete s athletic mindset and our mental training system. The experience goes like this, Cool, I am an Eagle just like Cat Osterman, Mike Trout, and Peyton Manning The athlete can then look at the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of their matched type. They instantly have a positive kinship with multiple prominent athletes. Knowing certain pros have similar mental strengths AND weaknesses goes a long way to help younger athletes buy-in and feel not only comfortable but pumped about using our system.
