11 Serial Hemoglobin Investigation of Serial Hemoglobin as a Diagnostic Marker for Detecting Occult Blood Loss in Blunt Trauma Patients Objective: Determining whether a serial hematocrit is useful in detecting occult blood loss in blunt trauma patients. 11
12 ROSE Re-evaluation Of Systemic Early neuromuscular blockade Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of early neuromuscular blockade in reducing mortality and morbidity in patients with moderate-severe ARDS in comparison to a control group with no routine early neuromuscular blockade. 12

14 Abdominal CT Developing a Decision Instrument to Guide Selective Abdominal/Pelvic Imaging of Blunt Trauma Patients Objective: To determine whether low risk criteria can reliably identify patients who have sustained significant abdominal or pelvic injuries and safely decrease CT imaging of blunt trauma patients. 14
15 DEBUT Diverticulitis Evaluation of Patient Burden, Utilization & Trajectory Objective: To better understand the care given to patients who have diverticulitis and their outcomes. 15
16 VIOLET Vitamin D to Improve Outcomes by Leveraging Early Treatment Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of early administration of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in reducing mortality and morbidity for vitamin D deficient patients at high risk for ARDS and mortality. 16
17 COPD Prospective Study to Validate Biomarkers of Seven Proposed Phenotypes in Clinically Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Comparison with Subjects Experiencing Exacerbations Objective: To prospectively characterize and distinguish 7 proposed phenotypes of clinically stable COPD by measuring the expression of various biomarkers 17
18 Whole Blood Transfusion Of Stored Whole Blood In A Civilian Trauma Center: A Prospective Evaluation Of Feasibility And Outcomes Objective: Determine the effectiveness of trauma resuscitation using fresh whole blood compared to component therapy and its effects on hospital outcomes. 18

20 Outpatient VTE Outpatient Venous Thromboembolism Management Objective: Measure 30 day post diagnosis readmission rate of emergency department patients diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism (venous thromboembolism, VTE) and treated at home with apixaban, rivaroxaban, or enoxaparin and warfarin. 20

23 Education Committee 1. Description: The Education Committee aims to better inform our members on topics in medicine, healthcare, and research. Current projects include presentations on various medical or research topics, newsletter education content, protocol study materials, and video tutorials. The committee has presented on EKG's, Ethics of Consenting Patients for Studies, Shock, Congestive Heart Failure, Thromboelastography (TEG), Depression Research, Antibiotic Resistance. 2. Time Commitment: As needed 3. Goals: Provide members with opportunities to educate peers on various topics. 23
24 Training Committee 1. Description: The Training Committee aims to equip new members with the knowledge and skills to function independently on shifts as clinical research volunteers. Participation involves regular weekly meetings during training season. 2. Time Commitment: Weekly meetings during new members training period (about 1 hour each). Training will occur during committee member s weekly shift (4 hours). 3. Goals: To standardize and streamline new member training. 24
25 Social Committee 1. Description: The Social Committee organizes social events to foster camaraderie among fellow EMRAs. In the past, this committee has planned events such as hikes, and dinners. Participation involves planning the logistics, polling for interest, and attending committee meetings during the quarter. 2. Time Commitment: 1-2 meetings per quarter, ~1-2 hours per quarter not including social participation (not mandatory). 3. Goals: Plan 2-3 socials to give EMRAs the opportunity to get to know each other outside of shift. 25
26 Research Committee 1. Description: The Research Committee aims to educate the UCLA community about the clinical research we assist with at Ronald Reagan. Current projects include creating and presenting posters for recently completed studies at Poster Day during Undergraduate Research Week. Our hope is that committee members will better understand the implications of the research we are involved with and develop the communication skills to share the results with others. 2. Time Commitment: Bi-weekly meetings ~1-2 hours with additional work conducted outside of meetings (Late Winter and Spring Quarter) 3. Goals: Present at Undergraduate Research Week Poster Day! 26
27 Whole Blood Activation Team 1. Description: Members will assist with personally running platelet maps on blood samples collected by general EMRA members to test clotting function of patients receiving massive transfusions. 2. Time Commitment: Bi-weekly meetings ~1-2 hours with additional work conducted outside of meetings. 3. Goals: Assess the clinical implications of transfusing either component or whole blood therapy in terms of clotting and general patient outcome. 27

29 Time Commitment One-year time commitment beginning the completion of your training, including all holidays and school breaks 8 hours per week 4 hour hospital shift 2 hour clerical shift 2 hour staying up-to-date on studies 2 general meetings per quarter, each 2-3 hours in length New Members - Summer Shifts 29
30 How You Can Get Involved Typically, 5-10 students are accepted Accepted members will start with a probationary period Additional hold member positions available based on need Applicants are highly encouraged to re-apply 30
31 Application Process Application (Google UCLA EMRA and select the Recruitment tab) Application opens after the info session on Thursday, April 12th Due on Friday, April 20th at 11:59PM Absolutely no late applications are accepted. Do not wait until 11:30pm to apply, as technical difficulties will not be accommodated. All applications are read and scored by a panel of coordinators and managers 31
32 Application Process Interviews Primary and Secondary The highest scoring written applications will receive invitations to primary interviews by April 30th for the first round that week. Primary interview candidates must bring unofficial transcript/dpr and provide at least one reference contact. Selected applicants will be invited for a secondary interview by May 7th for the second round that week. Secondary interview candidates must provide an official sealed transcript 32
