Cury MD, Ron Blankstein MD, and Suhny Abbara MD Spotlight: Education Guidelines Several members of FiRST assisted with developing SCCT guidelines for Level 1 CCT training, including Dr. Christopher Maroules and Dr. Michael Cheezum, which will be published in the Journal of Cardiovascula Computed Tomography. As CCT use has expandedd over the last several years, it is important high quality CCT training be incorporated into all radiology and cardiology training programs. The SCCT Level 1 curriculum guidelines were developed to standardize general CCT training in an effort to narrow the current knowledge gap and encourage more residents and fellows to pursue Level 2 & Level 3 training. The guidelines outline a series of core CCT learning objectives acrosss nine domains, including Dr. Christopher Maroules (left) and Dr. Michael Cheezum (right) Dr. Michael Cheezum radiation safety, patient selection, CT fundamentals, image acquisition,, post processing, artifacts, coronary anatomy & pathology, cardiac structure & function, and extra cardiac pathology. A suggested approach to establishing a successful CCT curriculum and recommended timeframee for incorporating the curriculum are described in the guidelines. Dr. Michael Cheezum is prior FiRST Chair ( term) and is currently a cardiology fellow at the Non Invasive Cardiovascular Imaging Program at Brigham and Women s Hospital. Dr. Christopher Maroules serves as current FiRST Chair ( term) and is a radiology resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. On the Horizon: SCCT/FiRST partnership with MGH offer trainees access to premierr online CCT curriculum A recent alliance established between Massachusettss General Hospital and SCCT/FiRST will offer all SCCT resident and fellow members free 12 month access to a premier online CCT curriculum beginning July The program is named RadIQ and will contain 50 CCT cases. A robust interface will offer users the opportunity to manipulate full 3D datasets and meet Level 1 training requirements. Cases can also be used towards Level 2 and Level 3 certification. The RadIQ curriculum will include short quizzes after each case which will cover all learning objectives outlined in the SCCT Level 1 CCT Curriculum Guidelines. This will make for an ideal training tool, particularly for residents and fellows at institutions without large cardiac imaging resources. 2 RadIQ developerss Dr. Garry Choy and Dr. Udo Hoffmann at Massachusetts General Hospital are collaborating with FiRST to ensure delivery of only the highest quality CCT educational material. 3 Case of the Month is an opportunity for SCCT members to share interesting, rare, and/or clinically useful cases covering all aspects of cardiovascular CT. All casee submissions will undergo peer review, and top cases will be featured on the SCCT website and shared with members via . SCCTT welcomes the submission of casess from all members, including residents and fellows. Case of for the the Month selections will also be considered SCCT Case of the Year award, which will be presented at the 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas, July For guidelines on submitting a case to SCCT Case of the Month, please visit scct.org/caseofmonth Submit your case to be considered for SCCT Case-of-the-Month & Case-of-the-Year! 4 Feature: Interview with Dr. Maros Ferencik on the transition from fellow to faculty We sat down with Dr. Maros Ferencik, past FiRST Chair ( ) and current Assistant Professor at Oregon Health & Science University and Director of Cardiovascular CT Research, to discuss his transition from fellow to faculty. Dr. Ferencik credits SCCT and FiRST for contributing to his early careerr success. He has served on the SCCT Annual Scientific Meeting Planning Committee and was recently appointed Associate Editor for thee Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Ferencik received support from the Dr. Maros Ferencik AHA Fellow to Faculty Transition Grant.. How has SCCT and FiRST helped you build a career in cardiovascularr imaging? SCCT and my involvement with FiRST have been an amazing gateway to join the research and clinical community in cardiovascular CT. I was able to work with a fantastic group of motivated young cardiologists and radiologists and created connections and friendships that continue. Through my involvement in the FiRST Committee, I was invited to work in other committees of the SCCT, including the Annual Scientificc Meeting Planning Committee. What are some of the challenges you experienced transitioning from fellow to faculty? Theree are many, and the transition from fellow to faculty is a stressful time in your career. It is crucial to find a good mentor (or mentors) and have them guide you throughout this transition. An ideal mentor will support you and help you find and choose the best position and balance. For those interested in academia and research, you need to start planning early and apply for funding. The first five years of faculty are critical in establishing your research interest and it is virtually impossible with full time clinical duties. Any advice for trainees who aspire for careers in cardiac imaging? The future of cardiovascular CT is very exciting both clinically and in research. We are extending the indications and applications of CT. The focus of CT is moving from anatomic only imaging to functional assessment using perfusion and also fractional flow reserve assessment. We evaluate coronary disease beyond stenosis and we are finding the importance of coronary plaque assessment. We need well trained physician scientists who will have both skills in imaging and research methodology. So, find a good mentor, get involved locally with your cardiovascular CT program and nationally with the SCCT, and the future is bright! FiRST was created by SCCT leadership in to increasee trainee participation in cardiovascular CT education, research, advocacy, and career development. This past year has been particularly exciting as FiRST has focused its efforts on several important projects, including development of guidelines for CCT training, organizing a comprehensive online CCT curriculum, expanding SCCT Case of the Month, promoting outreach through social media, and contributing to SCCT website development.
