8 The Schmieding Story His mission was to improve home caregiver training No program to train caregivers specifically to care for people in the home Has become nationally recognized At home there is always hope» Lawrence Schmieding Uniqueness of operation Began with a grassroots need Replication of home environment for the training Curriculum built around tiered educational program Students can be those wanting a job in home caregiving or family members caring for an older adult

9 Background and Statistics Most adults plan to remain at home as they grow older (AARP, June 2009). In 2009, seven (7) out of every ten (10) caregivers interviewed were caring for someone 50 years of age or older. (National Alliance for Caregiving, 2009). The proportion of home and community-based workers is projected to continue to increase over the next decade with home and community based direct-care workers outnumbering facility workers by nearly two (2) to one (1).(PHI, Fact sheet #1, 2008) Projections by the Bureau of Labor Statistics call for an additional one (1) million new direct-care positions by (PHI, 2008) Seventy eight percent (78%) of caregivers feel they need more help or information (National Alliance for Caregiving, 2009). Tiered Program Types of Training Certified Elder Pal Personal Care Assistant Home Care Assistant Alzheimer s/dementia Family/Friends Physical skills Caring for the person with Dementia

10 JENNIFER M. PALMA Going through the Schmieding program was so beneficial to me... The program is tailor-made for someone who truly wants to give quality care to those in need. BARBARA CARPER Because the Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program was so hands-on and thorough, I have all the confidence in the world that I can take care of the elderly in the most effective and loving way. PAUL E. CASEY, CNA The Schmieding training gave me a way to help other senior citizens while providing me with a job that I dearly love...helping people. Their training made passing the board exam for being a certified nursing assistant a breeze. Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Visited the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education in 2007 Recognized the need for more home caregivers Funded a 9 month planning grant in 2008 to the for investigating statewide readiness In 2009, awarded $3 million to start 4 Schmieding caregiver sites Jonesboro Pine Bluff Texarkana West Memphis Funding provided for 3 years

11 Funding for 3 years Each site to become a replication Schmieding Caregiving Program Specific Curriculum to certify students Requires dedicated home atmosphere for training area Dedicated staff trained in the Schmieding method - 1 full time -2 part time Training equipment and materials Marketing and teaching of classes Grand opening of the Schmieding Home Caregiver Training in Jonesboro April 6 th
