Hackensack University Medical Center provided $254,471,497 in uncompensated care in Uncompensated care includes charity and bad debt.
4 Community Health Benefits The Impact of Community Benefits Why is maintaining a community benefits program important to Hackensack University Medical Center? Because we are all part of one larger community one dedicated to progressing even further in our missions of healthcare, community service, and research. Board of Health Contracts The Health Awareness Regional Program (HARP) administrates professional public health services to 29 Bergen County municipalities through Board of Health contracts. Towns served include: Bergenfield, Bogota, Carlstadt, Hackensack, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, East Rutherford, Elmwood Park, Emerson, Englewood Cliffs, Fair Lawn, Fairview, Fort Lee, Garfield, Harrington Park, Leonia, Mahwah, Montvale, New Milford, Palisades Park, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, River Edge, River Vale, Saddle Brook, Tenafly, Township of Washington, and Wallington. In collaboration with partners throughout New Jersey, HARP develops programs to meet the needs of the community. Major partnerships include: Health Officers, Health Departments, Schools, the American Cancer Society- Bergen County Chapter, Partnership for a Healthy Bergen County, Bergen County Health Department, Bergen County Cancer Coalition, Bergen County Municipal Nurse Association, School Nurses Association, Northern New Jersey Maternal and Child Health Consortium, Passaic-Bergen Lead Coalition, the New Jersey Public Health Administrators Association, and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Maternal/Child Health Best Practices Taskforce. Promoting a Healthy Community The Dark Side of the Sun Melanoma Education HARP collaborated with the Bergen County Cancer Coalition and participated in the NJ Comprehensive County-Wide Cancer Assessment. HARP responded to the community need by providing a program called The Dark Side of the Sun, a program developed to educate students in the prevention of melanoma. The program was presented to students and parents as well as for train the trainer programs for recreation counselors and school nurses. Handwashing/Cough into Your Sleeve According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, handwashing is one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infection. One hundred nineteen programs on how and when to wash hands were presented to 3,044 children throughout Bergen County. Flu Immunizations HARP provided 1,478 flu immunizations and colla borated with contracting municipalities to achieve maximum immunization rates to their residents. Access to Care HARP collaborated with the Partnership for a Healthy Bergen County to host a New Jersey Family Care Enrollment program. Sixty-two individuals were enrolled making it one of the most successful program enrollments in In 2007 HARP presented 471 health promotion programs to 27,941 participants. Topics included but were not limited to: alcohol abuse, tobacco education, nutrition, injury control, physical fitness and exercise, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and STD awareness. Corporations HARP provided lectures, screenings and health promotion programs for corporations to assist in their efforts to provide employees with information on healthy lifestyle choices. These services included health fairs, educational presentations, and courses on nutrition. HARP also provided CPR and First Aid classes, in addition to Bloodborne Pathogen Training, Hepatitis and Tetanus/Diphtheria, Tuberculosis health education and testing. HARP provides these services to corporations in Bergen, Hudson, and Morris counties in New Jersey. Some of our other community benefits include: Free screenings with HUMC s AIR Express mobile asthma care unit for uninsured and under-insured families in Hackensack screenings held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Hackensack schools, and the Hackensack Housing Authority Free prostate cancer screenings every year for a week throughout Northern New Jersey, Harlem, and mid-town Manhattan partnership with the Daily News more than 10,000 men have been screened in the past five years Free community health education through our Speakers Bureau Free injury prevention programs from our Trauma/Surgical Critical Care and Injury Prevention Section of the Department of Surgery, including Traumaroo for young children; ENCARE to prevent drinking and driving (for junior high and high school students); TAKECARE to teach senior citizens safety and injury prevention; Think First head and spinal cord injury prevention for high school students; seatbelt and car seat checkpoints; Stoned Cold, a DWI re-enactment for high school students; and Hush Little Baby, a video-documentary about shaken baby syndrome. Our many contributions to community organizations include: Contributions to non-profit organizations/ community groups, including The Record s Newspaper in Education Program Donations of equipment and medical supplies to Bergen County emergency medical squads, fire departments, and community organizations; and defibrillators to Hackensack Middle School, High School, and four elementary schools Food, clothing, and blanket donations to local shelters and families
