2 THE ROYAL LIVERPOOL HOSPITAL AND BROADGREEN HOSPITALS NHS TRUST The Royal Liverpool Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital merged on the 1 st April 1995 to form a single trust the RLBUHT. The two hospitals are within easy reach of each other being only 4 miles apart. The merger of the original two hospitals has produced one of the largest acute teaching Trusts within the North West. Most medical and surgical specialities are represented within the Trust and many departments offer a service for tertiary referrals from both within and outside the Mersey region. There are close links with the University of Liverpool and the Clinical Academic departments of the Faculty of Medicine that are situated within the Trust. The main University campus is immediately adjacent to the RLUH site. The Trust is working towards Foundation Trust status; a major new hospital build is currently under construction on the RLUH site due to complete in Further development is planned for the RLUH site where the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital will be accompanied by the relocated Clatterbridge Center for Oncology and a commercial Bioscience Accelerator building. These new build developments will form the heart of a centralised teaching hospital biocampus within the city s knowledge quarter LIVERPOOL Liverpool is a vibrant city. It has experienced a major revival over the past few years and Merseysiders enjoy a good quality of life. Liverpool has benefited from rapid development recently not least because it was the European Capital of Culture Liverpool has had World Heritage city status conferred on it by UNESCO. Liverpool is unusually compact and travel both into and around the city is fairly stress free. There has been significant investment over the past two years and the city centre has been rejuvenated and regenerated and now boasts the best and most modern shopping, restaurant and night life facilities in the North West region. The city has a strong sporting tradition, with soccer in particular giving the city an international reputation as a community made more cohesive by sport. There is an annual international tennis tournament every summer, and the North West region as a whole has a strong rugby tradition. The city is within easy driving distance of North Wales, the Pennines and the Lake District for those keen on relaxing or outdoor pursuits in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Merseyside s theatres, museums and art collections are amongst its strongest assets. Liverpool has the biggest single collection of Grade One listed buildings and more national museums and galleries than any other city outside London.The city is alive with numerous artistic enterprises including independent theatre groups, authors, poets, dance groups, photography, sculpture and street art. The Walker Art Gallery, Tate Gallery and the Empire, Playhouse and Everyman theatres contribute significantly to the city s cultural life. The Philharmonic Orchestra is nationally acclaimed and there is a full range of musical activities of all types.

3 The Directorate of Clinical Gerontology (CG) Clinical gerontology has beds on both the Royal Liverpool Hospital site (70 beds) and the Broadgreen Hospital site (BGH), 20 rehabilitation beds and 23 subacute beds. On the RLH site the Directorate has 1 general acute geriatric ward, a 29 bedded Acute Unit (ASU) and a 18 bed rapid throughput Frailty Unit. On the BGH site the Unit beds are based in the Alexandra Wing. Further development of the Clinical Gerontology bedbase on the Broadgreen site is planned in line with the trusts transition to the new build Royal Liverpool Hospital. The Directorate s activities on both sites provide subspecialty expertise in orthogeriatric care, falls, stroke, movement disorder/parkinson s Disease, dementia and general multidisciplinary team delivered care of the older person with complex medical, functional and social needs. The Directorate s Clinical Gerontology Outpatients Department, is on the Broadgreen site adjacent to directorates BGH bed base; it has facilities for 30 day places and is used for subspecialty clinics as above, discharge follow up, medical assessment and multidisciplinary therapy. The Day Hospital provides specialist clinics for older people devoted to, Movement Disorder, Falls and Mental Health, as well as general multidisciplinary clinics providing both medical assessment and rehabilitation for older people. The appointee will have a general Geriatric Medical Clinic incorporating this facility as well as a second sub-speciality clinic. The successful appointee will be free to adapt the theme of this clinic to any other subspecialty interest they may have or may wish to develop. The Directorate has good links with Intermediate Care which is well developed in Liverpool. The BGH site includes wards run by Liverpool Primary Care Trust for the management of Intermediate Care patients. There are Postgraduate Centres and library facilities on both sites with regular educational meetings held throughout the academic year. MEDICAL STAFFING All Consultant Geriatricians see a wide variety of general geriatric medical problems as the vast majority of patients are admitted as emergencies to the RLH site. The Consultants all have sub-speciality interests including stroke, Parkinson s disease & movement disorder, falls, orthogerontology, intermediate care & community geriatrics, acute and interface geriatric medicine and dementia. There are 8 Specialist or Specialty Registrars (of which 1 is a Clinical Fellow), 6 based at the RLH site and 2 based at BGH. They are responsible for the care of patients under 2 to 4 Consultants depending on the firm. The Registrars rotate between wards every 3 months to enhance their training experience. There are 7 Core Medical trainees, 3 GP Vocational Training Scheme trainees and 1 Foundation Year 2 trainee at SHO level, and 4 Foundation Year 1 trainees at the RLH site. On the BGH site there are 3 GP Vocational Training Scheme trainees at SHO level. An Band 8A Advanced Nurse Practitioner supports the work of hyperacute stroke services and the Acute Unit. The Directorate also has eight Specialist Nurses and a Parkinson s Disease Nurse Specialist. The Post Applications are invited for a post as a LAS SHO in Clinical Gerontology, the post will be based in The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust (RLBUHT). Clinical Duties The successful candidate will supervise the management of the team s in-patients. Research and Training Opportunities The Clinical Gerontology department is a regionally well respected department involved in a wide range of subspecialties; the postholder will be encouraged to undertake audit projects.

5 Within the Department there are opportunities to attend in house educational sessions Wednesday lunchtime: clinical gerontology teaching pm AGE meeting Friday am: Grand Round The candidate will also be encouraged to attend regional training sessions in Clinical Gerontology, The Liverpool Medical Institution (10mins walk from the hospital) has monthly Royal College of Physicians teach-in sessions.
