1 THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGY HEPATOLOGY & NUTRITION (ESPGHAN) THE DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS & THE EUROPEAN LABORATORY FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF FOOD INDUCED DISEASES, UNIVERSITY FEDERICO II, NAPLES, ITALY in association with THE ANEMGI ONLUS Associazione per la NeUroGastroenterologia e la Motilità Gastrointestinale Announce the THIRD ESPGHAN CAPRI MEETING COLONIC DISEASES The third Capri meeting will focus on the colon. The colon is a complex and multifunctional organ as well as the cause and the target of both functional and organic disorders that require an increased need of medical resources. The meeting will attempt to bring scientists and clinicians together to discuss a somewhat-neglected organ an organ that has been well-studied by researchers but whose disorders are not often discussed. Speakers are asked to prepare discussions on their research that are tailored to an audience primarily made up of clinicians. The meeting s aim is to encourage better diagnosis and treatment of patients with colonic diseases. Congenital abnormalities, motility disorders, colonic inflammatory diseases, features of colonic infection and inhabitation, and new approaches to evaluating the colon, including evaluation in the pre- and postoperative settings will be discussed along with other current topics. 7 Deadline: December 20, If successful your abstract will be printed in an International Journal to be available to delegates attending the Meeting. Authors will be notified if their abstracts have been accepted by January 20, NOD MICE ON A GLUTEN-CONTAINING DIET SHOW HIGHER INCIDENCE OF DIABETES AND SIGNS OF SMALL INTESTINAL ENTEROPATHY F. Maurano 1, G. Mazzarella 1, R. Stefanile 1, R. D Arienzo 1, D. Luongo 1, S.Auricchio 2, R.Troncone 2, M.Rossi 1 1 Institute of Food Science and Technology, CNR, Avellino, Italy, 2 Dept Paediatrics and ELFID, University Federico II, Naples, Italy. Background. Several evidence suggest that the mucosal immune response plays a role in the pathogenesis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Methods. 3- to 4-week-old female NOD mice were maintained under strict pathogen-free conditions on a standard diet (SD) or on a gluten-free diet (GFD). Small intestine intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) density and villus and crypt length were assessed; the MHC class II expression was also evaluated by immunohistochemistry, as well as the message for proinflammatory cytokines by semiquantitative. Results: The GFD group developed diabetes significantly later than the SD group: after 43 weeks diabetes incidence was 95% (n= 22) in SD mice compared to 67% (n=23) in GFD mice (P< 0.05). A decreased villous length ( vs ; P< 0.001), and higher IEL number ( vs ; P< 0.001) were also detected in the SD group. Only in the latter group epithelial expression of MHC class II molecules was present, as well as the message for gamma-interferon is more strong. Conclusions. Signs of intestinal inflammation are present in NOD mice, apparently related to the presence of gluten in their diet. In NOD mice an abnormal mucosal immune response to gluten may contribute to the pathogenesis of IDDM.
