5 Hear Me, Understand Me, and Support Me: Living with anxiety disorders and depression There is no greater challenge facing our country than mental health. Mental health problems and illnesses are the leading cause of both short-and long-term disabilities in Canada. Mental health does not discriminate; it affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness such as depression or anxiety disorders at some point in their lives. Many more will struggle with stress or grief over their lifetime. Yet, an estimated two-thirds of those with mental health problems will not seek professional help partly because of the fear of being stigmatized, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Education and knowledge to reduce stigma against those with mental illness will go a long way to dissolving fears and misconceptions about mental illness so that people can get the help they need. Stigma and the misconceptions about the causes and treatment of mental illness is a major barrier preventing people from seeking help. Many people living with a mental illness say the stigma they face is often worse than the illness itself. This panel will focus on: Recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression; Available treatment and therapy options; Community resources available for patients and their friends, co-workers, and families; Latest research being done on anxiety disorders and depression; and Learning more about the myths and stigma that surround mental illnesses. Moderator Dr. Roumen Milev Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry (Adult Psychiatry), Queen s Panel Dr. Kate Harkness Associate Professor, Departments of Psychology & Psychiatry (Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry), Queen s Dr. Sarosh Khalid-Khan Assistant Professor, Departments of Psychiatry & Psychology (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry), Queen s Dr. Alina Marin Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry (Adult Psychiatry), Queen s Dr. Dallas Seitz Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry (Geriatric Psychiatry), Queen s Marian Wright Director of Client Services, Frontenac Community Mental Health & Addiction Services Derrick Zimmerman Patient & Family Advisory Council, Kingston General Hospital 5
6 Hockey and the Brain An overview of paediatric concussions in minor hockey Concussion in minor hockey is a common injury that has important implications for child and youth health. Children and youth are more susceptible to concussive brain injuries than adults. They also take longer to recover from concussions, are more susceptible to repeat injuries, and are at higher risk for lasting effects of the injury on neurocognitive function. Paediatric concussions should, therefore, be considered as complex injuries that need to be evaluated and managed within the wider context of child development, and not as sport-related injuries. A single diagnostic test for concussions does not exist. Clinically, the identification of concussion in young athletes is based on the history of the traumatic event, the signs and symptoms reported, and outcomes of specialized tests as appropriate. The absence of clear criteria for diagnosis and monitoring of recovery does make the decisions to return-to-play difficult for parents and coaches. Education and prevention of on-ice injuries is the only cure for paediatric concussions in minor hockey. This panel will focus on: Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a concussion; Evaluation and testing for a suspected concussion; Effects of concussion brain injuries on child development; Hear the first-hand story of a young athlete who has had a concussion in hockey; Appraising the protective role of helmets; Discussing the role of parents and coaches in the prevention of injuries in hockey; and Providing resources within the community. Moderator Dr. Lucie Pelland Assistant Professor, School of Rehabilitation Therapy & Centre for Neuroscience Studies, Queen s Panel Dr. H. Michael O Connor Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, Queen s Mr. Todd Muller Hockey Parent and Coach Hockey Athlete Representative 6
7 International Clinical Trials Day It all began in the 18th century when Dr. James Lind gave sailors oranges and lemons to eat while at sea to prevent scurvy. Today, clinical trials can transform new scientific discoveries into the standard treatments of tomorrow and make new therapies available to patients sooner. The celebration of International Clinical Trials Day originated in 2005 and pays tribute to and recognizes all those who have participated in or are involved in the delivery of clinical trials. International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated each year on May 20th. Historical Background The first recorded clinical trial occurred in 1747 when James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, investigated treatments for sailors with scurvy. He divided the sailors into pairs and gave each pair a different treatment. Lind observed that the sailors who received two oranges and a lemon every day recovered remarkably well. Dr. Lind published his findings and the British Navy began to send its sailors out to sea with a supply of limes to prevent scurvy and earning the sailors the nickname limeys. 7
