Students will have clinical exposure to a variety of medical conditions not present in the US, diseases in late stages of presentation, and complex medical conditions. Bethesda Hospital is a rural health care facility in the northeastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal in the small village of Ubombo, in South Africa. Senior medical students have a wonderful opportunity to participate in all aspects of care in this combined inpatient-outpatient facility. In addition to learning about disease processes endemic to the region, students will gain a greater understanding of the challenge, of patient care in resource-limited settings, and an introduction to the role of primary care physicians in such settings. 1. Medical decision making, analysis of medical data, and synthesis of information for rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease. 4. Mechanism of action, utility, and adverse effects of medications commonly used to treat rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease. 5. Biologic rationale, methods for performing, and utility/limitations of laboratory tests used in diagnosis and monitoring rheumatic disease. 6. Indications, risks, and benefits for procedures such as joint arthrocentesis and injection, soft tissue injections, musculoskeletal imaging.
