6 Forms of Award of Fellowship of ICP Eligibility Criteria for the Award of Fellowship of Indian College of Physicians Minimum experience of 10 years after Post Graduation Continuous membership of the Association of Physicians of India for not less than 7 years Should have made a significnat contribution to research/teaching/development in the field of medicine Should have contributed to API by way of scientific or organizational works To make the selection objective, a point system has been followed in assessing the suitability of the applications. The Criteria used by the Credentials Committee for the award of fellowship are: 1. Qualification 2. Experience in Medical Profession 3. Publications 4. Honours / Awards 5. Research work 6. Contribution to API 7. CME & Conference (API/ICP) 8. Social welfare/ community service The fellowship form should be proposed and seconded by Founder Fellow/Fellow of ICP only. The Proposer/Seconder should not propose/second more than 3 nominees for award of ICP in a particular year It is the responsibility of the Nominee/Applicant to get the proposal completed by the proposer and seconder along with the citation. API Membership No. of the proposer/seconder should be entered by the proposer / seconder themselves. The proposer should satisfy the requirements for proposal as under: * The Nominee is a life member of API. * The Nominee has completed 10 years after post-graduation The Nominee should read the Form carefully before filling the columns, to project their achievements appropriately. The Nominee should list their achievements in appropriate columns. Proof of qualifications, publications, honours, awards, must be submitted as supporting data. The supporting data should be numbered parawise (eg 1., 2., 3., etc.), For more than one supporting documents, the numbering should be in alphabets (eg 1 (a), (b), (c), etc.). No hand written application will be accepted. 8 Book Review Haematology Today Book Review Haematology Today Editor : Prof MB Agarwal, MD, MNAMS Like every year, this is another serial publication in the field of haematology and haemato-oncology published at the occasion of XIVth National CME in Haematology and Haemato-Oncology held at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, Mumbai, in January This year s book has the largest volume in this series. It has 71 chapters distributed amongst 17 sections covering various aspects of clinical and laboratory haematology. The book runs into 602 pages and has 108 authors or co-authors from both India and abroad. The whole book is printed on glossy paper with plenty of coloured pictures, diagrams and tables which make it very illustrative. Like every year, it has hard binding which adds to its durability. The subject selection relates to advances in last 3 years and most of the authors have done wonderful job from this angle. There are updated chapters related to molecular techniques in haematological malignancies, molecularly targeted therapies in haematological malignancies, molecular advances in the field of MDS, molecular monitoring of CML, lymphoma classification - post-who, cord blood transplantation, adoptive immunotherapy as well as updates on new drugs like Alemtuzumab, Lenalidomide and Deferasirox. Each chapter has a summary, introduction and carry home messages followed by important references for future reading. As usual, the book has author and subject index which makes it easy to trace the concerned chapter. Although the book has been brought out within a year of last year s publication i.e. Haematology Today , it has such a wealth of new information that everyone interested in the field of haematology (teachers, clinicians and students) will like to have it on their shelf. 9 Obituary Obituary Dr. MV Govindappa The sudden demise of Prof. MV Govindappa, affectionately called MVG on 11 th Dec 2007 has left a deep void in the field of Clinical Medicine. His students, patients and family members are still shell shocked at this most unexpected event. I was indeed fortunate enough by being a student of Prof MVG both at UG and PG levels 38 and 28 years ago, and what I am today is only because of his guidance and there are scores of doctors who have been benefited by benevolence. Dr. MV Govindappa was born in a poor agricultural family of Gouribidanur in the year He had a brilliant academic career at Mysore Medical College from He was the best outgoing student of the college and won various gold medals and prizes.he joined Govt service as an Assistant Surgeon in 1958 and was a part time lecturer in Internal Medicine in MMC. He had his MRCP from Edinborough during and after his return worked as Asst Professor, Reader, and Prof of Medicine in various Medical colleges of the state and was Prof and HOD medicine at Hubli Med College in 1984 when he took voluntary retirement. He was both a UG and PG examiner of various universities of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. He worked in JSS Med College for 5 years and was working as a Consultant at BM Hospital Mysore till his death. He has a son who is also a Consultant in Internal Medicine and a daughter. The value of Prof MVG and his teachings was known to all his students when he was alive itself. He was a wonderful teacher of Clinical Medicine and in an era of minimal investigations his uncanny ability of arriving at a diagnosis was flawless. He was a very sportive examiner and always considered the ability of the student in giving a pass and nothing else. He always respected his patients and his students and spoke to them with dignity. Although some of his students considered him as short tempered, students close to him knew that he was annoyed by the mistakes committed by them. He was always meticulously dressed and highly disciplined and humane. His departure is an irreparable loss to medical profession in general and to his students in particular.
