1 MARCH 6, 2017 Tell us something good SLEEP WEEK 2017 By: Lisa Pierce It s that time of the year again. Time to run the clocks forward for daylight savings time. Losing an hour of sleep is harder on us than gaining an hour. Of course most of us already know that. Did you know that it takes more than 48 hours to adjust to a one-hour loss? Truth be known we are all a little sleepdeprived. With it being National Sleep Awareness week, what better time to adopt good sleep habits? Sleep is one of life s essentials. Sleep deprivation weakens our immune system leaving us more susceptible to other diseases, as well as causing stress. Stress also weakens our immune systems. Both of these things can upset the mental process. You may suffer from memory loss, irritability, confusion and emotional highs and lows. Staying healthy and getting adequate sleep go hand in hand, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be the root cause of it all. Lack of sleep causes daytime fatigue and also has been known to shorten one s life span. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep to function. So start your week by making time for sleep. Here are some good bedtime habits to practice: Sleep in a cool dark room Do not use the bedroom for work activities or watching TV Avoid heavy foods late at night Create a bedtime ritual with a regular bedtime Power down: Blue light from screens can disrupt your circadian rhythm and affect your ability to sleep. Turn off your mobile device before going to bed! Trying these few suggestions can help improve your sleep habits. If you find you are still fatigued and think that you may have a sleep disorder, then be sure to come see us! Sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. A visit to our Sleep Clinic for a consultation with one of our three providers can get you on your way to better sleep and better health. OSA does not discriminate! If you are waking up and feel as tired as you did when you went to bed, or if you have been told by a family member or your significant other that you look tired, you may have OSA. Some risk factors include being male and being over age 40. However, sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, including children. Untreated OSA can lead to high blood pressure and other cardiac diseases, weight gain, and headaches. It has also been known to cause job impairment and motor vehicle accidents. Dr. Klark Turpen, Amy Thornbury, APRN, and Kimberly Bowman, APRN, see patients Monday through Friday. They will determine if a sleep study is needed, and if so, what type of study. We do in-lab studies and HST (Home Sleep Test). It is determined by underlying health issues and your insurance company. T.J. Sleep Team
2 HIPAA Realities We will be featuring HIPAA violation stories in the newsletter for the next several weeks to help our employees to see real-world violations that have happened. Health Columbia Parking Spot: Leah Rock Lunch with the CEO A very happy patient shared her positive experience on Facebook. Great job, team! Often we only complain and I am as guilty as anyone, but I want to give a big thumbs up to every single employee I had contact with today at the TJ Health Pavilion and TJ Samson hospital! I have been sick since Feb. 20 and in bed literally since Friday. The awesome Dr. Andy Turner and his nurse Rhonda are always wonderful, but today everyone I had contact with went over and above for me! From the valet to registration, to the lab, to radiology at the Pavilion to IV therapy at the hospital, each person today did more than just their job description for me. Every. Single. One. THANK YOU to those people who still take pride in their jobs! It was appreciated and did not go unnoticed today! I plan to call tomorrow and give some credit to these wonderful folks - yes, I took names! Invitations have been sent to employees who have birthdays in March. You are invited to enjoy a lunch with Bud on one of the following dates. MARCH to 1 p.m. T.J. Samson Community Hospital 4th Floor Classroom MARCH to 1 p.m. T.J. 4 Successful Joint Commission Visit: Great Job Team! On February 28, The Joint Commission visited T.J. Samson Community Hospital and T.J. Home Health. The surveyors were here for two days, and they found that T.J. met and/ or exceeded their performance standards. Thank you to each employee who worked so hard to make The Joint Commission's visit such a success. We appreciate your hard work and dedication! What is The Joint Commission?
