Effects of Sleep Depravation By Student Health Service Sleep deprivation is the condition of not having enough sleep; it can be or acute. A chronic sleeprestricted state can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function. Sleep deprivation can lead to higher risk of chronic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. According to Harvard Medical School, for people with hypertension, one night without enough sleep can cause elevated blood pressure all through the next day. Adolescents are notorious for not getting enough sleep. The average amount of sleep that teenagers get is between 7 and 7 ¼ hours. However, they need between 9 and 9 ½ hours (studies show that most teenagers need exactly 9 ¼ hours of sleep). Information from Science and Technology Magazine Effects of Sleep Depravation 1. It causes memory loss Sure, you might remember a few things for your exam the next day but good luck remembering anything after that. 2 2. It increases your risk of dying in a car accident exponentially - In many ways, sleep deprivation is worse than being intoxicated. Driving while sleepy is a not a good idea under any circumstance. Sleep loss tricks you into thinking you are okay. 3. It kills creativity 4. It decreases your ability to respond under pressure- Well rested people at least have the possibility of keeping a level head in highpressure situations. Sleep deprived people will panic, make rash decisions, or freeze up. 5. It decreases your ability to cope with stress - Your body is weaker both physically and mentally. Even low levels of stress will harm you in ways you are not aware of until later on. 6. It increases chronic pains 7. It destroys your bones - It is during slow wave sleep that certain growth hormones are released. These chemicals repair your body tissues, increase your muscle mass, thicken your bones, and strengthen your skin. That is not something you want to miss out on. 8. It destroys your bones - When you lose sleep your body cannot repair itself. You start falling apart. 9. It makes you weaker - It is during slow wave sleep that certain growth hormones are released. These chemicals repair your body tissues, increase your muscle mass, thicken your bones, and strengthen your skin. That is not something you want to miss out on. 10. It increases your risk of stroke - Anyone who sleeps less than six hours a night acquires a significantly increased risk of having a stroke. 11. It causes irregular heartbeats 12. It tricks you - You think you are performing ok, but you are not. You cannot even judge your own effectiveness at basic tasks adequately. 13. It increases your risk of heart disease - The stress of not sleeping causes your body to release all of the same hormones that will one day give you a heart attack. In fact, people who sleep less than 6 hours per day have a 48 percent higher chance of dying from heart complications later in life. 14. It reduces the effect of vaccines - Anything less than seven hours per night and you might as well consider not getting the vaccine in the first place. 15. It decreases your life expectancy - By this point this should probably come as no surprise. People who sleep less than 6 hours per day are 4 times more likely to die of any cause within the next decade than those that do. 16. It makes your brain "dirty" -Although this is one of the more recent additions to this list, some researchers have recently discussed ways that sleep promotes the removal of neural waste from your brain. 17. It permanently damages your skin - When you do not get enough sleep your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. Aside from some of its more terrifying effects, it breaks Page 2 The is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to

3 down skin collagen, which is the protein that keep your skin smooth and elastic. 18. It increases your risk of diabetes - Lack of sleep increases your body s resistance to insulin. For those of you that are medically challenged, this means that your chance of getting type 2 diabetes skyrockets. 19. It weakens your immune system - Missing sleep will almost guarantee to make you sick. However, if you have not realized thus far, the common cold is the least of your worries. 20. It makes it harder to read other people's emotions - Not only is it hard to control your own emotions, you will have a hard time relating to others. Certainly not a good thing when it comes to jobs, marriages, etc. 21. It makes it harder to control your emotions - Sleepy people have a harder time controlling their emotional responses. It is like a drug you relinquish control of your body. 22. It depresses you - While lack of sleep is not a direct cause of depression, the emotional side effects of sleep deprivation are a breeding ground for psychological disorders. 23. It increases inflammation throughout your body - This itself turns into a risk factor for numerous other diseases and complications. 25. It increases your risk of cancer - Especially breast and prostate cancer. In fact, the link between sleeplessness and cancer has been studies so much that the World Health Organization has considered labeling shift work as a carcinogen. Academics NWEA Testing By Jonathan Myers May 16 th through May 27 th, OSD students from Grade 3-12 and the Adult Transition Program will be taking the NorthWest Evaluation Association assessments in the following subjects; Reading, Language Usage, and Mathematics. It is important to ensure that students get their rest the night before their tests and that, they eat and hydrate well prior to and during the testing periods. ES / MS May 23 - May 26 HS May 16 May 19 ATP May 20 and May It causes you to gain weight - If you are trying to lose weight then you definitely do not want to lose sleep as well. Sleepy people are hungrier and tend to eat hundreds of more calories per day. Page 3 The is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to
