3 TOBACCO USE PREVENTION EDUCATION (TUPE) Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) is a comprehensive evidence-based tobacco-use prevention, youth development, intervention, and cessation program. The TUPE Program provides support, training, technical assistance and information to districts in the development and implementation of tobacco free policies and practices in schools. Funded through Prop 99 & Prop 56

5 Benefits of Tobacco-Free Certification Complete 1-page application by June 30, 2018 Eligible to apply for TUPE funds Tier 1: $6,000 (application due November 2018) Tier 2: $54 ADA

6 Adolescence Brain development in process: speed and timing of maturation varies for different brain areas Emotional brain: Limbic system is boosted important for social and sexual behaviors Executive brain: Cognitive control over behavior is still in development Typical adolescent traits - uncontrollable mood swings, impulsivity, risk taking, and peerdirected social interactions

18 What do we know about teen tobacco use? E-cig smokers are 3x more likely to smoke conventional cigarettes a year later The earlier use of nicotine, the less able to quit and more likely to consume increasingly greater quantities Teenage smokers 3x more likely to shortness of breath 3x more likely to use alcohol 8x more likely to use marijuana 22 times more likely to use cocaine.

19 Youth Voice & Advocacy What examples of youth voice and activism have you seen? Youth Voice is more than a goal for young people alone; instead, it is a powerful avenue towards identifying and creating what is good for everyone, our common good. Engaging young people can build a strong sense of community, a commitment to civic action, and a passion for active learning.

31 Recruitment Strategies: Direction Target recruitment: ESL, SWD, Foster Youth, Minority groups, etc. School wide presentations, tabling events, morning announcements, sharing opportunity with teachers. Peer to peer recruitment Teacher and peer-nomination At least 2 students per school Countywide CATT, and CATT Chapters model.

32 How can you help? Tobacco is a big danger to youth development, engage youth in efforts that prevent them and their peers from using tobacco products. Embrace and support youth engagement in your schools Promote opportunities school and district wide Become a TUPE school
