5 Reducing Harm from Alcohol Problem Alcohol = 10% of the UK s burden of disease > 60 medical conditions: Cancers / High blood pressure / Cirrhosis of the liver / Depression Gastro intestinal problems / Falls / Self-harm / Seizures UK Stats: 1.2m alcohol-related hospital admissions in England 8,748 deaths directly related to alcohol 3rd highest risk factor after smoking and obesity Alcohol dependence underdiagnosed and under-treated with only 6% of alcohol dependent patients receiving treatment Wessex stats: > 200million of NHS spend More higher risk drinkers and alcohol specific hospital admissions in Portsmouth, Southampton & Bournemouth Males have high alcohol specific & alcohol related liver disease mortality in Weymouth & Portland and Fareham Alcohol specific mortality figures for females increasing in Basingstoke & Deane and Eastleigh Alcohol specific hospital admissions for the under 18s high in Isle of Wight Date/Author
