Is there data supporting the evaluation of the concentration in an unexposed population? Intoxicating concentrations? Lethal concentrations? ther peer-reviewed literature to support conclusion? Could NPS toxic insult be due to drug-drug interaction, food/beverage interaction or one with existing condition/disease state? D. Garvin, Pharm. D., R. Ph., F-ABFT 22

23 Parting Thoughts I Illicit drug market-constantly evolving! Shift from physical to on-line market places Acute Use-young, healthy, experimental attitude Chronic Use-add NPS; due to lack of drugs of choice? Not all NPS are synthetics belief that if natural it must be safe Compound specific PK/PD information is growing but still insufficient Parting Thoughts II Acute toxicity of NPS appears to be similar to existing ( classical ) drugs Many NPS not detected by routine toxicology testing Confirmatory testing essentially required Patient management is essentially the same Symptomatic and supportive care Duration of action (toxicity) appears to be longer References Baselt, R., Disposition of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Man, Biomedical Publications, Foster City, CA., 2008 CDC.
