2 OVER THE COUNTER Drugs - Substances other than food that change the structure or function of the mind. Medicine - Drugs that are used to treat of prevent diseases and other conditions. Medicines that prevent disease: Vaccines prevent diseases Ex. You should be vaccinated for:! Tetanus! Measles! Mumps! Rubella (Chicken poxs)! Hepatitis B! Influenza Medicines that fight disease:! Antibiotics

3 Reactions and Categories of Drugs Tolerance - A person s body becomes used to the effect of a medicine and needs greater amounts of it to be effective. Side effect - any reaction to a medicine other than the one intended. Ex. Upset stomach Dizziness Drowsiness Stimulants - Drugs that sleep up the body s functions Effects - Speed up central nervous system Increased heart rate, respiratory rates High blood pressure Caffeine - A mild stimulant found in coffee, soda and tea Depressants - Drugs that slow down the body s functions and reactions Tranquilizers

4 Pharm Parties: A Lethal Mix 29 One of the newest and most frightening trends in teen drug experimentation are so-called pharm parties where teens gather at someone s home, drop an array of pharmaceuticals (like Vicodin, Oxycontin or Xanax) into a bowl, then consume handfuls of this dangerous trail mix.

5 3 main dangers of taking narcotics: Drug interactions you don t know what drug you re taking or its strength Your own body chemistry interactions do you have allergies, do you have a medical condition, are you taking other medications, do you have any unknown medical conditions????????? Overdosing either from too much of one drug, a combination of drugs, or cutting a time-release pill in half

Methamphetamine street names: Meth, Crystal Meth, Crystal, Ice, Crank, Speed, Glass, & Chalk. It can be smoked, injected intravenously, snorted or eaten. The user experiences an intense "rush" lasting only a few minutes when smoked or injected.

16 Ecstasy - Ecstasy is a stimulant that can cause hyperthermia - where body temp. can get so high it leads to liver, kidney and heart failure. The second phase of E is a hallucinogen that causes people to have heightened emotions, BUT they are actually killing the brain cells responsible for these emotions and can lose the ability to feel emotions and desires permanently!!! (Meth and cocaine use also causes this same type of brain damage!) The "love" drug, "E" uses your brain's own serotonin. It may feel good now, but you pay later: You can lose the ability to feel emotions, lose sexual function, have low mood, feel flat and depressed. Strange side-effect is teeth grinding page 7

17 Stimulant's effects on the sex drive: It revs it up the dopamine nervous system and burns it out! "Although the stimulant effect of meth and Ecstasy have the nickname "love drug" they can eventually destroy the sex drive. For a short time it can boost the sex drive and sexual performance. ( But, remember how your brain makes connections and loves patterns? It gets used to having sex while high) AND, after you've been using Meth for about 6 months or so you can't have sex unless you're high," and "after you've been using it for a little bit longer you can't have sex when you are high. Nothing happens. It doesn't work!

18 Ecstasy is not safe This girl died minutes before this picture was taken. She lost her fight for life 36 hours after taking two high strength ecstasy tablets. This picture was taken at the request of her parents to publicize the dangers of taking ecstasy. 18 Within hours, she was in convulsions and had to be rushed to the hospital. There, she lapsed into a coma and her body temperature rose quickly, not stopping until it reached 108 degrees. "She was bleeding everywhere," says her mother. "Her blood cells were just erupting. Her intestines were bleeding; her stomach was bleeding. She was bleeding from the mouth.

19 Ecstasy Death could you be held responsible if you were there? The teen who gave this 16-year old girl Ecstasy stood by as the drug ended the girl's life. She was convicted of second-degree manslaughter. 19

20 Cough Medicine: Some cough syrups that contain DXM often also contain decongestants, which when abused, can cause hypoxic brain damage (not getting enough oxygen to the brain). Just because it s an Over-the-Counter drug does not mean it s safe. It s not if you don t follow directions. Sleeping pills, tranquilizers are highly addictive, and can also cause the brain to completely shut down and go into a coma or death. Page 7

Salvia: is a legal herb that may be legal, but very dangerous. Even seasoned drug users have called salvia too intense and scary. In fact some teenage suicides have been blamed on the herb. Salvia can cause paranoia, short term memory loss, and it can be a precursor to schizophrenia. Synthetic marijuana - Also known as Spice, Skunk, Yucatan Fire and Moon Rocks, synthetic marijuana refers to a wide variety of herbal mixtures containing psychoactive ingredients from a number of different plants. "We don't know exactly what's in it, so we don't understand the full dangers, but we know that teens can get into a car accident as if they're drunk or stoned on the real marijuana," says Raskin.

23 Rohypnol and GHB: Rohypnol ( Roofies) is known as the date rape drug. It is not legally made in the U.S. It s odorless and colorless and causes a person to be completely out of it and they wake up the next day with a memory loss of what ALERT!!!- Date Rape Danger happened. GHB- Gamma hydroxy butyrate is basically degreasing solvent or floor stripper mixed with drain cleaner. It is colorless but has a slight bitter taste. It can Cause the brain to lose control of the muscles and cause wetting your pants, respiratory problems, and choking on a piece of gum. It also causes coma and death. Page 8

Narcotics can cause: Restlessness, Nausea, Dizziness, Confusion, Respiratory depression, Scars (tracks) caused by injections, Loss of appetite, Cough Lethargy, Tolerance, Addiction, Unconsciousness Withdrawal affects: Watery eyes, Runny nose, Cramps, Loss of appetite, Irritability, Nausea, Tremors, Panic, Chills, Sweating Overdose: Slow, shallow breathing, Clammy skin, Convulsions Respiratory depression and arrest (stop breathing), Coma, Death

27 Heroin can be pressed into pill form, or powder in a capsule, but it s not as common-usually injected

28 Heroin is an illegal drug processed from morphine, a natural opiate derived from specific varieties of poppy. Heroin high, a sudden surge of intense pleasure known among heroin users as "the rush." Skin flushes and the arms and legs feel heavy. Dry mouth, nausea, vomiting or intense itchiness. End of the rush Drowsy for several hours (being "on the nod.") Mental functioning is slow and disoriented. Heart function and breathing slows Addicts commonly abuse heroin as many as four times a day. Intravenous heroin abuse is the most common method Increases the risk of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C AND air bubble in vein danger! Diluted or "cut" with additives, the drug becomes even more dangerous. Fentanyl is sometimes sold as heroin or mixed with heroin. It is approximately fifty tim as powerful as heroin and can stop lung function almost immediately.

29 Other Medical Conditions Associated with Heroin: These symptoms are prevalent among heroin addicts: abscesses and boils, bacterial infections of heart valves -blood borne bacterial infections -kidney disease, liver disease -lung infections -pneumonia -track marks (scarred, collapsed veins due to needle use) -tuberculosis. The additives present in street heroin and other illegal drugs do not necessarily dissolve well, and may build up in the arteries. The build up of these additives can result in local cell death and infection in the lungs, liver, heart and brain. Additives used to cut heroin accumulate in the bloodstream and may prompt an immune response in the body. The resulting allergic reactions and inflammation can cause arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

30 The physical dependence caused by heroin addiction results in some of the most severe withdrawal symptoms of all illegal drugs. Within hours of ceasing heroin use, the addict experiences severe restlessness, muscle pain, bone pain, vomiting, diarrhea, cold flashes and unwanted leg movements.
