1 Department of Humanities and Sciences Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate (310) Quarter: Fall 2015 DEVELOPMENTAL ASPECTS OF PSYCHOLOGY AND ADDICTION Community Health Sciences X units Reg# Instructor: Alina Bond, LCSW Day of the Week: Tuesdays, Sep 29-Oct 27, 5 mtgs Time: 6:30-9:30pm Location: Extension Lindbrook Center, Room 204ABC Office Hours: By arrangement Course Description: This course will provide students with a basic level of understanding of the etiology of addiction and clinical implications derived from the application of psychology to chemically dependent behavior. To understand its complicated nature as a disease, the course will focus on current genetic and environmental research in the development of substance use disorders. Specific topics to be covered include: the biological, developmental, psychological, environmental and social factors that lead to vulnerability to addictions; symptoms of addictive disorders; and prevalence across the life span among target populations, including adolescents, seniors, families, and those with trauma-exposure. We will also examine various treatment approaches from a developmental perspective, including translational approaches to treatment that bridge biology and behavior. Specific Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Understand the major theories of human development Define the stages of development from prenatal through adulthood and identify the risk factors that lead to SUD vulnerability at each stage. Describe the prevalence and patterns of use across the life span and among target populations, including adolescents, seniors, families, and those with trauma-exposure. Identify and examine research-based treatment interventions appropriate for various developmental life stages, including those that target adolescents, adults, and older adults. The California Foundation for the Advancement Of Addiction Professionals (CFAAP) Education Requirements: This course covers the following CFAAP Academic Content Area: 1. Physiology and Pharmacology of Alcohol and Other Drugs: o Examination of the effects of alcohol and similar legal psychoactive drugs to the body and behavior; damage to the body and behaviors; damage to the brain, liver and other organs.

Only petitions related to extreme and emergent situations or religious holidays will be considered. The petition must be accompanied by verifiable supporting documentation of the inability to attend the exam (in the case of an illness or medical emergency, documentation from a licensed health care professional is required). Examples of extreme and emergent situations may include: accident, death, injury, or serious illness. Petitions must be submitted to the Department immediately upon recognition of the inability to take the exam or within 24 hours after the exam takes place in an unexpected emergency situation. Grading Scheme Course grades will be based on the following: : I In addition to the readings, attendance and class discussions are a critical component to your learning. Attending lectures is your opportunity to ask questions, elaborate on readings, and express your understanding of materials and assignments. A sign-in sheet will be at the front of every class; it is your responsibility to sign-in when you are in attendance. Exams: There will be two Exams. The first will cover material from Sessions 1,2, and 3 The second exam will cover material from Sessions 4 and 5. Homework: There will be 4 assignments. They will be short answer questions that will cover the required reading for that week. Grading Breakdown: Grade Percentage Letter Grade # Points Pass/Fail % A points Pass 80-89% B Points Pass 70-79% C Points Pass 60-69% D Points Fail <59% F < 59 Points Fail All grades are final when filed by the instructor on the Final Grade Report.
