Teaching and evaluating of a variety of individual and group exercise sessions including several different types of physical activities. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Apply standards, ethics, and expectations of professional communities related to health and exercise science (SLO 3). 2. Demonstrate learned competencies and skills as part of learning activities and experiences (SLO 4). 3. Identify, assess, and analyze human movement in different contexts (SLO 5). Course Objectives By the end of this course, students who invest quality time, effort, energy and thought in fulfilling the requirements will be able to do the following: Develop fitness plans for one-on-one, small group and large group fitness courses (SLO 4) Organize and conduct exercise sessions/classes and include all components of a safe and productive workout. (SLO 3, 4, 5) Execute successfully a variety of fitness lessons in different settings. (SLO 3, 4, 5) Apply effective communication skills during all oral presentations and teaching practicums (SLO 4) Offer corrective feedback to peers and clients during course activities and projects (SLO 4, 5) Adhere to the teaching principles of exercise prescription as outlined by the American Council on Exercise (SLO 4, 5) Prepare and lead clients through the initial phases of a fitness program including interview, health screening, fitness assessment, exercise prescription and fitness training. 2 Attendance Attendance at all classes, laboratories and other academic appointments is required. According to university policy, you cannot miss more than 20% of all regularly scheduled courses, which translates into no more than four class meetings. An excused absence (to be determined by the instructor, such as for illness, etc.) must be reported to the instructor (via ) as soon as possible and before the next class. Written documentation by an external entity must be provided (doctor s note, etc.). Arriving late and leaving early to classes, laboratories and other academic appointments is unprofessional. If you are more than 10 minutes late or leave more than 10 minutes early to any scheduled course meeting, you will be marked as absent for the entirety of the two-hour session and will not earn any points for in-class activities. Professionalism To prepare students for the professional world, certain behaviors/activities are not allowed in the classroom: Cell phones should be turned off before entering the classroom. Texting, messaging, talking on phone, etc. are not permitted. Picture-taking and recording during class is not allowed. Laptops/iPads should not be used for surfing the web or watching movies during class. It is disrespectful and unprofessional to use these devices inappropriately during class. Late assignments are unacceptable. Tardiness is unprofessional behavior. Eating in class: Please do not bring food or beverages to class. Water is permitted. Do not be disruptive or disrespectful to your colleagues and instructors. You may be asked to leave. When communicating via with instructor, always use proper language and respectful address. Also include your name, course and section # as well as your . Presentation is important. Your attention to detail, demeanor, and attire factor into how you are perceived as a professional. Active participation in class discussions and critiques is an essential part of learning. Without participating and expressing opinions and thoughts, it is impossible to clarify your goals and develop a personal style. Academic Integrity Statement The student is expected to practice honesty in all activities related to this course. Original work is expected from the student, unless appropriate credit is given to specific work cited. Plagiarism is unacceptable, as are other types of cheating. This policy equally applied to exercise sessions; what you record on your exercise log must reflect exercise you actually performed. Refer to the LSU Student Handbook for details: Appropriate penalties will be enforced. All instances of academic misconduct will be reported to the Academic Integrity Committee. To be sure that you have no misunderstandings about definitions of academic honesty or academic dishonesty, refer to your LSU Student Handbook. 4 Assignments Fitness Expo: You will work with a small group to design a booth for the Fitness Expo on Sunday, April 19 th. You will be assigned a specific fitness topic from the list below. You will be responsible to prepare the following elements: Informational brochure Booth decoration/display information A mini-workout of 3 minutes (not if you are assigned the fitness testing booth) On the day of the event, your small group will be responsible for carrying out your plans. An Easy-up and a table will be provided for you. FITNESS TOPICS: (will be assigned) Pilates Core Strength with Resistance Ball BOSU Fitness Testing (Push-ups/Curl-ups/BMI/BP) Strength Training with Resistance Bands Flexibility Reading Resource Guide: You are responsible for assembling your own reading resource guide. Print out the following articles/handouts, create an index and assemble them in the order below in a binder. Be sure to add numbers and titles in the index and create four sections according to the below outline. Go to: and choose five articles Go to: and choose ten articles Go to: and choose five articles Go to: and choose ten articles Reading Response: Respond to the articles of the Reading Resources Guide. The Reading Response should be a minimum of three pages and no more than five pages long (APA, Times New Roman, 12-font, double-spaced). Here is the outline of what you should follow and respond to: 1. Introduction: summarize your personal experience reviewing all the articles (Did you find them helpful? Why? Why not?) 2. What did you learn? Discuss at minimum five points (from different articles). 3. Conclusion: List all the articles by title that you plan to use as resources for your clients. Personal Training Project: You will be responsible for finding a personal training client (someone you DO NOT already know). You will train this person over the course of five weeks. This project must include the following components that will all be turned in accumulated in a folder (everything must be typed and put in the order as it appears below). 1. Initial Investigation Forms (include Par-Q, Health History Questionnaire, Medical Release Form (if necessary)), Lifestyle Information Form, Liability Waiver-Informed Consent) 2. Fitness Assessment Forms (Function & Physiological Assessments, Goals/FITT Plan, Client Commitment Form, Trainer-Client Contract) 3. Conduct 8 training sessions at a minimum of 30 minutes per session over the course of five weeks (submit a record of training sessions). Turn in a minimum of 8 different forms (Fitness Program Form/Session Evaluation forms) completed in detail, neatly written (these lessons should be planned out in advance, however, you should remain flexible to make changes) 4. Evaluation Forms: Conduct a thorough Client Progress Evaluation after all 8 sessions are completed; have your client complete Trainer Evaluation Form ; complete the Trainer Self-Evaluation form Methods of Fitness Instruction (4 units) 4

5 Peer Group Fitness Session: You will be working with a small group and create a group fitness session that you will co-teach to the rest of the class. Each person will receive one part in this project: Warm-up/Cool-down/Stretching, cardio session, strength training session, cool- Each part should be minutes in length. The group is responsible for making sure that the entire group fitness session runs smoothly, that there are no breaks in-between changes other than water break and retrieving equipment. The group will have to choose and come up with appropriate music and support each other and the participants as they teach. The group needs to work together, plan together and teach together. The other students (participants) will evaluate the individual teachers of each group. Furthermore, the group is responsible for turning in a complete lesson plan (just one for the group) prior to the class they are teaching. Worksite Fitness Training Project: 1. You will work in a small group of personal trainers 2. Find 2-4 people that you can train at their work place. They must be working at the university (staff or faculty). 3. You need to train your clients 8 separate times (as a group) (at least 30 min. each time) in addition to the initial interview and basic fitness testing/follow-up meeting over the course of five weeks. 4. You must conduct and do the following with your clients: (NOTE: Modify forms if necessary for this project) Initial interview (include Par-Q, Health History Questionnaire, Medical Release Form (if necessary)), Lifestyle Information Form, Liability Waiver-Informed Consent) Secondary meeting: Fitness Testing (Fitness Assessment Form), Goals/FITT Plan, Client Commitment Form, Trainer-Client Contract) Fitness Program Form/Session Evaluations: Each person should turn in a minimum of 8 different forms (Fitness Program Form/Session Evaluation forms) completed in detail, neatly written (these lessons should be planned out in advance, however, you should remain flexible to make changes) Conduct 8 training sessions at a minimum of 30 minutes per person per week over the course of five weeks. (Record of Training Sessions) Evaluation Forms: Conduct a thorough Client Program Evaluation after all 8 sessions are completed; have your client complete the Trainer Evaluation Form ; complete the Trainer Self-Evaluation form 5. Assemble all these forms, once they are completed and filled out, in a folder (one folder per group) (make sure you provide copies for your clients if they want to). 6. You should begin starting on assembling the paperwork well before you begin training your clients. 7. Remember: Professional outfits only 8. Equipment: It is your responsibility to check out equipment from the fitness center desk and return it after each training session. 9. Complete and submit a group evaluation form for each personal trainer in the group. Individual Group Fitness Session: You will teach a minute group fitness class to the rest of the students in this course. You will have to adhere to all principles and concepts learned in this course and you will have to design and submit a lesson plan for this session. Peer feedback evaluations will be conducted.
