Can you stay off the booze for 31 days? Feel better Save money Make a difference. Can you stay booze free for 31 days?
What is Dry January? Your chance to ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline, and save the pennies. Your mission: to avoid that cheeky after work pint, that glass of wine on the sofa, or that big boozy night out, for the whole month. Make a real difference to the lives of those harmed through alcohol misuse by getting family and friends to sponsor you and raise money for Alcohol Concern.
Why GO DRY? With Xmas excess gone, banish the booze this January and make a healthy start to the new year. By taking on the challenge you re sure to lose a few pounds while saving a few quid. And with no hangovers you ll find time and energy you never knew you had. Oh, and your skin will look nicer too. So go on, take time out, get thinking about your drinking and prove to yourself that you can say no to a tipple or two.
How to get involved with Dry January 1. Sign up at : 2. Ask your family and friends to sponsor your big challenge through Virgin Money Giving. 3. Receive tips and share your experience through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Any questions to dryjanuary@alcoholconcern.org.uk
Why is alcohol a workplace issue? Around a quarter of people drink above the lower risk guidelines. Everyday, around 200,000 people go to work with a hangover. A CBI/AXA survey estimated that 6% -15% of all sick days were alcohol related. Lost productivity and absenteeism due to alcohol cost the economy 17 million working days and 7bn a year.
How can an organisation take part? There are different levels at which an organisation can take part: Promote the campaign to staff via internal comms for voluntary sign up. Organise team competitions most money raised, most units of alcohol saved etc. Substitute alcohol at usual work events throughout the month. Use the campaign to get out healthy work messages. Sponsor the campaign (e.g. Daily Tip) and undertake joint PR & social media with Alcohol Concern. Contact
Will it work? This is not a medical detox programme and should not be undertaken by people with alcohol dependency issues. This is both an awareness raising campaign and a fundraiser for Alcohol Concern. Fundraising is optional but any money raised using this campaign and these materials must be donated to Alcohol Concern. The benefits of giving up alcohol for a short period include: improved sleep, losing weight, improved skin and hair quality, and saving money. It is unlikely there will be any significant change in liver function over a month. If you have physical withdrawal symptoms (like shaking, sweating or feeling anxious until you have a first drink of the day), you should take medical advice before stopping completely as it can be dangerous to do this too quickly without proper advice and support. This type of campaign has been run in different forms in Australia and New Zealand, where one campaign reports 2/3 of participants have had more alcohol free days than before, and just over half report reducing how often they drank alcoholic drinks. More than a third reduced the frequency of consumption for a whole year.
DryJanuary.org.uk The site is the key place to find out about Dry January: Sign up for Dry January and start raising money. Finding it tough? Check out the Dry January daily tipster throughout the 31 days for some inspiring ideas to keep you going. Find out how cutting out alcohol improves your health with the weekly Dry Science updates. See what s got people talking on the #DryJanuary Twitter feed. See the the best of Dry January s Instagram photos. And add your own.
Weekly updates Every Friday of the month you ll receive the Dry January giving you updates, ideas, great deals, and telling you how much money has been raised for Dry January.
Dry January on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram This is where we ll get people to share how they re coping with Dry January. From uploading photos of their hangover free Saturday mornings to tweeting about how they re finding going booze free.
