Our Promise To You All staff at 3aaa have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of our applicants and apprentices. If you are at risk at all, of any form of neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, or become aware of another young person that is, you must report it straight away. Neglect - Neglect is the persistent failure to meet a child or young person s basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child s or young person s health or development. It may involve a parent/carer failing to provide adequate food, shelter, and clothing, access to medical care, failure to protect a child or young person from physical harm, as well as excluding a child or young person from home or abandonment. Physical Abuse - Physical abuse may involve hitting, shaking, throwing, poisoning, burning or scalding, drowning, suffocating, or otherwise causing physical harm to a child or young person. It may also be caused by the parent/carer fabricating or inducing illness in a child or young person. Emotional Abuse - Emotional abuse is the persistent emotional ill-treatment of a child or young person such as to cause severe and adverse effects on the child s or young person s emotional development. It may involve conveying to a child or young person that he/she is worthless, unloved, or inadequate, or valued only in so far as they meet the needs of another person. Sexual Abuse - Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child or young person to take part in sexual activities, whether or not the child or young person is aware of what is happening. The activities may involve physical contact, including penetrative or nonpenetrative acts including non-contact activities [e.g. exposure to pornographic material, watching sexual activities or encouraging children and young people to behave in sexually inappropriate ways). You can speak to anyone from your academy about this or call someone from the Safeguarding Team, based in Head Office, directly. You should always have access to our Safeguarding and Prevent Policy as it is available in every academy, head office, and the intranet.
Safeguarding Team Designated Safeguarding Lead Sacha McCarthy telephone: Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead Kate Whittaker telephone: Prevent Workbook After beginning your apprenticeship, you will have received a Prevent Workbook. It s highly important that you read it all and complete the questions at the end to ensure full understanding. You should make sure you read thoroughly through the whole prevent section, and information regarding British Values and Extremism. Open Surgery The Safeguarding Team will be holding an open surgery every Thursday from 12pm until 5pm to discuss any concerns that you would like to raise.
Introduction Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of everyone, and protect them from any harm. NSPCC Facts: Rape and Sexual Abuse Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year; that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts. Nearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted d in England and Wales each year 1 in 5 women aged has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of16. Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police. Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence Useful links;
Mental Health Mental illness affects 1 in 4 people. We are here to help. Mental health problems are one of the main causes of the overall disease burden worldwide. Mental health and behavioral problems (e.g. depression, anxiety, and drug use) are reported to be the primary drivers of disability worldwide, causing over 40 million years of disability in 20 to 29-year-olds. Major depression is thought to be the second leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the burden of suicide and ischemic heart disease. It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem. One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years, particularly since the mid 1980 s Symptoms; Down, upset or tearful Restless, agitated or irritable Guilty, worthless, and down on yourself Isolated and unable to relate to other people A sense of unreality Delusions, such as paranoia Finding no pleasure in life or things you usually enjoy Hallucinations, such as hearing voices Struggling to sleep and eat Suicidal Empty and numb Hopeless and despairing No self-confidence or self-esteem Useful links; health-helplines.aspx
Mind Infoline Text Service Mind offers a FREE text service for practical topics such as; Different types of mental health problems Information on service and support Medication and alternative treatments The service is open Monday Friday from 9am to 6pm (excluding bank holidays). Simply text them on 86463, along with a description of the information you require.
Suicide and Self-Harm Self-harm is often understood to be a physical response to an emotional pain of some kind, and can be very addictive. Some of the things people do are quite well known, such as cutting, burning or pinching, but there are many, many ways to hurt yourself, including abusing drugs and alcohol or having an eating disorder. Suicide is the act of intentionally ending your life. There's no single reason why someone may try to take their own life, but certain things can increase the risk. A person may be more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they have a mental health condition, such as depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Misusing alcohol or drugs and having poor job security can also make a person more vulnerable. It's not always possible to prevent suicidal thoughts, but keeping your mind healthy with regular exercise, healthy eating and maintaining friendships can help you cope better with stressful or upsetting situations. It can be difficult to understand what causes suicidal feelings but they re often triggered by upsetting experiences such as: Living with mental illness Experiencing abuse Being bullied Being forced to marry Having very low self-worth Bereavement after losing a loved one Useful links;
Substance Abuse People abuse substances such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco for varied and complicated reasons. Drugs are chemicals. Different drugs, because of their chemical structures, can affect the body in different ways. In fact, some drugs can even change a person's body and brain in ways that last long after the person has stopped taking drugs, maybe even permanently. Health Problems Weaken the immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections. Cause cardiovascular conditions ranging from abnormal heart rate to heart attacks. Injected drugs can also lead to collapsed veins and infections of the blood vessels and heart valves. Cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Cause the liver to have to work harder, possibly causing significant damage or liver failure. Cause seizures, stroke and widespread brain damage that can impact all aspects of daily life by causing problems with memory, attention and decision-making, including sustained mental confusion and permanent brain damage. Produce global body changes such as breast development in men, dramatic fluctuations in appetite and increases in body temperature, which may impact a variety of health conditions. Effects on the Brain All drugs of abuse - nicotine, cocaine, marijuana, and others - effect the brain's "reward" circuit, which is part of the limbic system. Drugs hijack this "reward" system, causing unusually large amounts of dopamine to flood the system. This flood of dopamine is what causes the "high" or euphoria associated with drug abuse. Behavioral Problems Aggressiveness Hallucinations Addiction Paranoia Impaired Judgement Impulsiveness Loss of Self-Control
Why do people take drugs? Different people take drugs for different reasons. Some people want to experiment and are curious about what drugs are like, whilst others use drugs to escape social or personal issues. Some people try drugs because their friends are and they don t want to be left out. When some people take drugs, they might experience a short-lived period of feeling happier, more energetic, more relaxed, more empathetic (in tune with others), or of unusual altered perceptions. It can be very tempting to try and re-live these experiences and this might lead people to continue to take drugs. However, drugs can also cause a whole range of immediate health problems, ranging from unpleasant ones such as feeling poorly, anxious, paranoid, or sedated or even leave you unconscious and at risk of death from a drug overdose.
