Price, Placement, and Promotion of Healthy Food Products Understanding the Inventory Tracking Tool

Price The amount a customer pays for a product. Price is very important to store owners as it helps determine profit Price can also affect demand.

Price Strategies Pre-weigh and price fresh fruits and vegetables. Repackage fresh fruits and vegetables into ready to go containers and promote the small quantity and price. Have a buy one, get one half price sale on healthy food items. Look for sales or discounts on certain healthy food items from your distributor and advertise those foods as sale items. If possible, buy from the distributor as a small group for certain products. Try bundling items.

Placement Providing the product at a place which is convenient for customers to access.

Placement Strategies Place ready to go containers of fruits and vegetables in the front of the store. Place healthy versions of common foods at eye level on your shelves. Place healthy foods in high traffic areas when possible. Place healthy items that are likely to be cooked together on the same shelf.

Promotion Methods of communication a store owner may use to provide information about the product. Radio, Newspaper Most consumers do not realize the thought and work that went into the placement of the products on the shelves.

Promotion Strategies Use your HNS price tags to draw attention to the healthy food choices that your store carries. Repackage fresh fruits and vegetables into ready to go containers and promote the smaller quantity and price. Advertise a date and a time period your store will be providing free food samples. Give away items such as a re-usable grocery bag or vegetable peeler, to the first ten customers.

Promotion Strategies Incentivize customers with Reward punch cards. Use your marker board to promote sales on healthy food items or to feature a weekly recipe. Try discounting or running a special price for individuals who purchase some or all the items needed to make the featured recipes. Look for sales or discounts on healthy food items from your distributor.
