1 BON APPETIT! Small exhibition* Visit guide * This exhibition is adapted from the larger exhibition "Bon appétit! L alimentation dans tous les sens" presented at the Cité des Sciences et de l industrie from February 2, 2010 to January 2, 2011 Time of visit : 1 hour 1

2 Bon Appétit! Food Every Which Way! Dear eaters big and small, Eating is the most natural and most important concern of every human being. One of the first instincts of a newborn child is to seek milk--food. As an adolescent, does this almost independent eater always know how to navigate the world of food? Does the child know why and what he eats? Or how to find a balance of health and happiness on her plate? Enjoy your visit, and bon appétit! This Visit Guide serves to help you discover the exhibit Bon Appétit! The back page has the answers to all the questions in the guide. You can consult them as you go along or at the end of your visit. Explore the exhibition freely; there is no set order. Plan your visit around the five areas covered: Why Do You Eat? - Food Investigation - Feel-Good Food - No Accounting for Taste - Responsible Eating Why Do You Eat? Here, you are going to discover that the purpose of eating is not only to fulfill an essential need. You will research the factors that drive you to eat. What makes you eat? You can ask yourself the question, "What makes you eat?" anytime during your life. To start this activity, sit down in front of the round screen inside a plate at the desk with all the colored buttons. Let the game guide you. Enter your sex and age then choose seven factors that motivate you to eat. At the end of the game, sum up your profile. Visit Guide 2 2

3 Food Investigation At this station, you will investigate all the processes involved in tasting a new food. Sensory investigation Sit under the purple lampshade to begin your investigation. Take a cupcake and let the game guide you. What are your impressions? Guess the amount of sugar, oil, and salt 1. This vending machine serves processed food: prepackaged dinner, soda, and a chocolate cupcake. In your opinion, how much sugar, salt, and oil does each contain? The cupcake is mostly made of (You can indicate the proportions.) sugar salt oil The prepackaged dinner is mostly made of sugar salt oil The soft drink is mostly made of sugar salt oil Verify your guesses by moving each food in front of you by pressing on the corresponding button. Use the lever on the machine to crush the food. On the screen, you will see the sugar, salt, and oil contents for each fall into the corresponding quantities. Visit Guide 3

4 Feel-Good Food How can one eat well without depriving oneself? First, a bit of exercise. Go around the "Fast Food" station table that resembles a sports stadium with five foods arranged on plates. To move them, you have to expend energy. The objective of this activity is to show the exchange of the nutritional value of food with the energy needed to burn the calories consumed. Fast Food 2. What portion of food has the most calories? (Careful, this is a trick question!) One bite of fish (17g) The potato chips One tenth of a can of soda A portion of green beans (4.5 oz) One square of candy bar 3. What energy must be used to move your plate, therefore expending the caloric intake of the food it contains? 5 calories 15 calories Arrange your meals At this station, you will learn how important it is to balance meals because humans have different needs based on our sex, age, and physical activity. Seat yourself at the table, and choose all that you eat and drink during one day! Your favorite meal of the day is: Breakfast Lunch Snack Dinner Do you play sports outside of school? If so, what sport? If not, are there any sports you'd like to play? How many calories did you consume this morning? Visit Guide 4

5 No Accounting for Taste Many people do not eat the same as you do. In this section, you will be exposed to the foods, habits, tastes, and preparations of someone else. The right words Sit down at the table with another visitor. Each of you must make the other guess the words on the top of each card without using the words listed beneath the main word. How many words were you both able to guess? What are some of your favorite words relating to food and taste? How many ways to say the same thing? We don't all have the same tastes in food. Maybe you like Brussels sprouts, or I like licorice. Tastes, like words or images, do not evoke the same response from everyone. Sit down at the table, and write as many words that come to your mind for each image. Compare your lists with the other players. How many words did you have in common? What were they? Visit Guide 5

6 For the connoisseurs of knowledge... In this exhibition, you can also: - Test your knowledge for fun with four quizzes. - Travel through the recipes of the world by watching ethnographic films that show food in other cultures. - Consult fact sheets to learn more about food and to find answers to specific questions that you may have. 7 - Responsible Eating This section of the exhibition makes an assessment of the food crisis and the possible paths to remedy it. This section also appeals to your conscience as a citizen of the world by encouraging you to become an independent and informed consumer. When you do your grocery shopping, do not forget all the tricks used by advertisers to persuade you to buy their products. What kind of consumer are you? Use this extended shopping cart to go grocery shopping. Scan the bar code of the products you have chosen. A multimedia presentation will then analyze your choices to show you the factors that, consciously or subconsciously, influenced your decisions (branding, enjoyment, practical appeal). How can we feed the world? Once upon a time, there was a distant planet in a far flung corner of the galaxy..." Watch the film. This animated video presents an assessment of the current food crisis and proposes paths to remedy it. Visit Guide 7

9 Feel-Good Food Fast Food 2. What portion of food has the most calories? In reality, they are all about the same based on their portions, but we rarely consume only a square of a candy bar or a mouthful of soda, so here is the caloric intake of what we are more likely to consume: 4.5 oz of green beans = 15 calories 1 fish filet of 3.5 oz = 75 calories 1 bag of chips of 1 oz = 115 calories 1 candy bar = 120 calories 1 can of soda = 150 calories 3. What energy must be used to move your plate, therefore expending the caloric intake of the food it contains? 5 kilocalories 15 kilocalories Moral: a bag of chips may taste good, but what an effort it takes to burn the calories from it! In your daily life, try to be aware of the balance between nutritional value and calorie content but without making it an obsession. Visit Guide 9

10 The book of the exhibition "Enjoy your meal" RESOURCES for the guide This exhibition was adapted from the larger exhibit, "Bon Appétit! L'Alimentation dans tous les sens," displayed at la Cité des sciences et de l industrie from February 2, 2010 to January 2, It is intended for preteens (9 14 years old), and it's objective is to give young people the means to understand the rules of good eating and their consequences. The Visit Guide serves as an aid to discovering the exhibition whether during a school field trip, club or group visit, or self-guided tour. The playful layout is intended to help young visitors to discover the exhibition on their own. They are invited to actively observe and answer questions. The majority of the activities do not ask for precise true-or-false answers, so the Guide activities are not like graded school worksheets. Besides, the answers to all the activities are given to the child which adds to the success of the visit. Children will feel proud for making their own discoveries, but they are not wandering alone with their Visit Guide in the exhibition. The role of the guide (teacher, leader, or family member) is to direct, sometimes help, inform, and have fun with the children. This sharing of the experience will benefit from the adult guide's foreknowledge on the subject from exhibition texts (see page 10).
