2 Health and Nutrition Concerns Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) have significantly worse health outcomes than their peers without ID (Anderson et al., 2013). When compared to the general population, individuals with ID are at an increased risk for chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes (Melville et al., 2007). Low levels of physical activity and poor nutrition all contribute to the development of chronic disease and poor health outcomes (Anderson et al., 2013; Heller, McCubbin, Drum, & Peterson, 2011).

3 Setting the Stage In light of complex health concerns and existing co-morbidities, a healthy diet may be a lower priority than other medical conditions; however nutrition is a major factor impacting overall health and quality of life.

4 Research Questions What is the association among nutrition and health indicators? How are opportunities to make choices about daily living related to choices about food? How is access to food related to other access indicators?

5 Data Participants were drawn from the Oklahoma National Core Indicators (NCI) project (N = 606). Random representative sample of adults receiving HCBS waiver services. Inclusion criteria for the final subsample (N = 371) was completion of Section 1 of the Adult In- Person Survey, which included additional nutrition related questions.

19 Implications & Future Directions Participants report adequate choice, access, and knowledge. However, they may not be consistently eating healthy foods. Is this a matter of personal choice? Are healthy foods available in the home? Future research Food diaries or 24 hour recall designed for individuals with IDD Intervention study (e.g., cooking classes)
