2 September 2018 is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and is symbolised by a gold ribbon, worn to commemorate the event. This is an annual international awareness month to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families of sufferers of childhood cancer. It was founded in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and is mainly run in the form of awareness events by cancer charities. Childhood cancer is devastating to growth and development in children, and devastating to their families and friends. At a time when young people should be focusing on school, play and socialising, if they have cancer, their focus can be on medication, operations, and what life they have left. Parents of childhood cancer sufferers have the anguish of watching their children suffer, and the stress of decisions on medications and treatments as well as decisions on time of work for themselves and time off school for the child, and worst, trying to explain to a child what is happening to them and answering the resulting questions on life and faith, and worst of all is the loss of a child to cancer, a devastation that can never be put right. Some forms of cancer are mainly or exclusively only seen in children, and that is something highlighted by the awareness month. Children can be more resilient to cancer and cancer treatments than adults, and there are many cases of triumph and complete recovery, where children make a complete recovery and grow up to normal life. But awareness, education and support are vital, which is why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is also vital.

3 Every parent has heard that children should be eating a "balanced diet." But a balance of what? Here are the nine nutrients that every child should be getting on a daily basis: 1. Protein Protein helps a child's body build cells, break down food into energy, fight infection, and carry oxygen. Foods that contain high levels of protein include: meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, and dairy products. 2. Carbohydrates While the latest diet trend is to "cut the carbs," carbohydrates are actually the body's most important source of energy. They help a child's body to use fat and protein for building and repairing tissue. Foods that contain high levels of carbohydrates include: breads, cereals, rice, crackers, pasta and potatoes. 3. Fats Fats are a great source of energy for kids and are easily stored in a child's body. They are also important in helping the body to properly use some of the other nutrients it needs. Foods that contain high levels of fats include: whole-milk dairy products, cooking oils, meat, fish, and nuts. 4. Calcium Calcium is essential in helping to build a child's healthy bones and teeth. It's also important for blood clotting and for nerve, muscle, and heart function. Foods that contain high levels of calcium include: milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, egg yolks, broccoli, spinach, and tofu. 5. Iron Iron is necessary for a child to build healthy blood that carries oxygen to cells all over the body. Foods that contain high levels of iron include: red meats, liver, poultry, shellfish, whole grains, beans, nuts, ironfortified cereals. 6. Folate Folate, necessary for soon-to-be mums, is also very important for kids. One of the B vitamins, folate is necessary for healthy growth and

4 development of a child's cells. Lack of this vitamin can cause anemia. Foods that contain high levels of folate include: whole-grain cereals, lentils, chickpeas, asparagus, spinach, black or kidney beans, and brussel sprouts. 7. Fibre Fibre helps produce bowel regularity in a child. It can also play a role in reducing the chances of heart disease and cancer later in life. Foods that contain high levels of fiber include: whole-grain cereals, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, seeds, and nuts. 8. Vitamin A Vitamin A serves a variety of purposes in kids and adults. It helps growth, assists the eyes in adjusting to dim and bright lights, keeps skin healthy, and works to prevent infection. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin A include: carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, apricots, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, fish oils, and egg yolks. 9. Vitamin C Vitamin C does more than just fighting off the common cold. It also holds the body's cells together, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, helps the body heal wounds, and is important for building strong bones and teeth. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C include: citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes, melons, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, papayas, and mangos. 5 THE STICKY TRUTH: HIDDEN SUGARS IN COMMON FOODS Sugar is the single biggest cause of tooth decay (as well as many other health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer) without sugar, you can t get cavities! However, to cut out sugar from your diet is easier said than done. Many common foods we eat, contain sugar and often a lot more than you may think.
