2 A good idea with a twist! On May 2, 1963, William Bounds filed for a U.S. patent on a pepper mill he called the Shake N Twist. The mill incorporated a unique 3-step adjusting ring, which made selecting a milling setting more precise, and a milling mechanism, which crushed rather than ground the peppercorns, resulting in a consistently milled pepper from a mill that promised not to jam or wear out.
