3 First WEIGHT LOSS RESULTS The following shows the results from companies (a national convenience store chain and a food service employer) whose employees participated in the First weight loss (6-session) program. 4 With my health coach, First, and me I transformed my life! I m on the right with my team. Not healthy, not happy. Kim s Story I am so excited. We are opening our first Bob Evans restaurant here in Hebron on Monday. My life and career as a restaurant kitchen manager is demanding and nonstop, but at least I can handle it all now. I am back to work after months off for surgeries and recuperation, and finally feel on top of the world again. But it has not been an easy road. I have had back and hernia problems for a while, and they really messed me up. I had surgery for a triple hernia last year and then months later needed back surgery as well. Sitting around, not moving, being in pain before and after my surgeries, I gained a lot of weight. I am short and was pushing 00 pounds. To say I was freaking out about it is an understatement. Ready to give up, I gave myself another chance with First I was hurting so bad physically that I was at my breaking point. My back pain was so severe. I couldn t stand for too long without feeling the numbing and sharp pain from my shoulder blades to the tip of my toes. I had been on our company s wellness program since I started with Travel Centers and had monthly coaching support. But my Orthus Health coach, could tell I was in trouble, so she recommended the First weight loss program. She guided me through the different program steps of First. I followed the program guide and reviewed the weekly outline on the portal. I worked the program, and the program was soon working for me. When I went back to work, I lost more weight and even saw a 7 pound drop in one week. I changed the way I ate, started drinking more water, and began a consistent exercise routine. The change has been amazing. (I ve lost 8 lbs. to date since starting First in November). The First program and my health coach have changed my life, my outlook, my health, and has simply transformed me. If you choose to sit, you will gain weight. Get up and move. Take the dog for a walk. There are no excuses. Stay away from fried foods and excessive red meats. Talk to your health coach. If you miss their call, call them back. If you are not using health coaching, you are missing out on extraordinary support. Get family members engaged with you. Find a family member willing to help you through the process. You may end up helping them as well. Follow your physician s orders. I did and the benefits keep coming.
5 Learning the difference between hunger and boredom I feel great after losing the weight. It keeps the pressure off my back and helps those muscles heal better. I have more energy and feel more stable. My diet includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, and water. My doctor was concerned about my bad cholesterol, which was a little high. Now, we are controlling it with diet, and all of my other numbers are good. Staying away from saturated fats helps. I still have 0 lbs. to go and then I ll be at my goal. I use an app on my phone to track what I eat. I ve been able to curb the eating sensation and figure out if I am truly hungry or just bored. I learned to pause before eating and take a drink of water, rather than just mindlessly putting something in my mouth. Losing weight has been critical to my healing process I was constantly hurting on my right side. Following my surgeries, I did weeks of physical therapy to help stretch the sciatic nerve and get my strength back. My doctor wanted me to focus on my core muscles. I had to change a lot of things. As I also have the beginning stages of osteoporosis, I had to become a dairy fan and take vitamins to supplement my diet. My health coach has helped me expand my exercise routine based on what my physician recommended. I can now do sitting and standing exercises without hurting my back. How coaching support has kept me on track I started with health coaching years ago to stop smoking. Then last year, while on the First weight loss program, I spoke with my coach every Tuesday. Once I went back to work, I then spoke with her every other week, and now we talk monthly. I m still making progress on the continued coaching program. Not only has it helped with my weight loss, but coaching has really helped me deal more effectively with family stressors. When I went back to work, many people noticed how much better I looked. I was not tired or stressed, and people were telling me how healthy I appeared. I ve worked in restaurants for years and was the worst eater bad habits, eating late at night. Now I drink water and curb my appetite. I have a cut off time at night. I don t look at my phone, and I don t sit and watch TV. I walk and move. I thank my health coach for her guidance and for getting me back to work! I thank Travel Centers for providing the resources and invaluable support tools. Now neither my weight, nor anything else, is going to hold me back. My ultimate goal to be able to ride my new bike. And, I can t wait.
6 So happy, so free, so alive Now and forever Before: May 0 Stacey s Story Like many people, I ve been on my share of diets, and also like many people I never had the right mindset until last summer. It was a free pass to a local gym that set me in motion, and I haven t stopped since. I now work out -6 days a week and walk - miles when I don t make it to the gym. But that is rare. The gym is convenient, and I no longer hold on to my repertoire of excuses. Last July I weighed in at 96 lbs. Today, the scale smiled back at lbs. For the first time in years, I like myself. I can honestly say I never did before. Once I started exercising, I knew I had to change the way I was thinking. I always turned to food when I was stressed, so I needed a replacement. The comfort I used to find in food now became the solace and strength I found in walking. I started liking how I looked, and others began to notice. With that came a boost in my confidence, and another mind shift. I started paying attention to the calories I was consuming. Monitoring calories has made the difference Food is no longer my reward. One sugar-free popsicle is enough of a treat now. I don t eat big meals now. When I m hungry, I ll have an apple or banana or ½ an English muffin. I watch my serving sizes and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Once I started looking at calories differently, I began to process the numbers better. Why would I want an 800 calorie milkshake when I only burned 00 calories at the gym? I began to realize how hard I had to work to burn those 00 calories and did not want to destroy what I achieved. I can now fit into a smaller size (size 6) than my athletic daughter. I took a photo of the tag to send to my best friend. Seeing that tag and sharing it was so invigorating. I am having fun for the first time in my life. Everyone on this type of journey needs support and cheerleaders. My youngest daughter is my biggest fan. She asks me how my weight is every day. She is my motivation and keeps me on track. I want to be around for my children and to be a good role model for them. Stacey s Tips for success: Stacey Rawls Customer Service 8 years Balls Foods After: June 06. Don t give up no matter what don t get discouraged when you re in a slump. Take small steps the first few are the hardest. Drink water even if you don t like it. Stay away from soda the calories aren t worth it, and diet sodas won t help. Like who you are no matter what size you are If I had believed in myself no matter what it would have helped me get started sooner
7 Health coaching is an integral part of my success I was diabetic and taking forms of medication. In February, my AC was 6. and in May down to.7. I m no longer classified as diabetic and no longer take blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes medications. I work with my Orthus Health coach, and it has been a wonderful experience. She helped me when I wasn t sure where to go or what to do. She gave me practical guidance and helped me to not feel guilty if I gained weight. She understood what I was feeling, the cravings, and the lack of motivation. Stacey at a color vibe in April 06 I received information in the mail about Orthus Health s First weight loss program, which is an additional benefit of the Balls Foods company wellness plan. I was informed I needed to do the program because my BMI put me in a high-risk category. This was the boost I needed to get me over the hump. My health coach told me to up my calories a bit and it didn t make sense to me, but I followed her instructions and it worked. We talked about protein and how much I should be eating. She gave me tips that will help me for the rest of my life. We both reached out together, and it was the best thing I did. I still call my health coach to let her know how I am doing, even after completing the program. I lost 8 pounds during the 6-week weight loss program. During that time, I went on vacation and gained weight and then lost it. She let me know that it was okay to gain some weight and then tackle it again. She encouraged me to not let it stop me from seeing the overall progress I was making. My Orthus Health coach, gave me tips that will last me the rest of my life. - Stacey I need to talk to my health coach to keep me on track. Maintenance takes a whole new mindset. I don t see the scale move as much as I did in the beginning, and I certainly don t want to go back to where I was. I look at before and after photos and had no idea I was as big as I was. The compliments I get now brighten my day, and when people tell me they are inspired by what I have accomplished it makes a difference. Someone looking up to me as their role model is such a powerful feeling. And, the rewards are priceless. I can keep up with my daughter at the mall. I can shop in the smaller size clothing sections. Size 6 clothes are cuter and cheaper than plus sizes. I have been transformed, and my transformation will continue the rest of my life. I will never go back. Stacey with one of her biggest fans
