40 years = 8,000 years

Unprecedented Change and Innovation Required 10

Farmers can t do this for us in the next 40 years if we are still eating too much and throwing food away 11

Today, 1/3 food is wasted Lost retail value $166 B Disposal costs add $1 B in local taxes/yr Buzby, and J. Hyman. Total and per capita value of food loss in the United States, Food Policy, 37(2012): Hall, Kevin D., Juen Guo, Michael Dore, and Carson C. Chow. "The progressive increase of food waste in America and its environmental impact." PLoS One 4, no. 11 (2009): e7940.

Photo of average annual American family food waste by National Geographic, October Buzby, Jean C., Jeffrey Hyman, Hayden Stewart, and Hodan F. Wells. The Value of Retail and Consumer Level Fruit and Vegetable Losses in the United States. Journal of Consumer Affairs 45, no. 3 (2011): The average U.S. consumer wastes 1.1 lbs. of food per day, lbs. per person each year Food waste from the average American family of four adds up 1 to 1,606 lbs. of uneaten food annually.

TOO MUCH! TOO MUCH! TOO MUCH! TOO MUCH!

Wasted Food: U.S. Consumers Reported Knowledge, Attitudes and Awareness Roni Neff, Marie Spiker and Patti Truant Anderson Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future Presented by Patti Truant Anderson, MPH, PhD January 26, 2016 IFDA Dairy Forum 2016

Nationally representative survey (n=1010) conducted in April 2014 Set out to understand: How aware are Americans of wasted food generally, and of food they waste? What attitudes shape their decisions about purchasing and discarding food? What would motivate them to waste less? To what extent do they perform behaviors known to increase or decrease waste? What retail and restaurant industry actions to reduce consumer-level waste of food are supported by consumers?

Reported Awareness, Knowledge, Effort 42% saw / heard about food waste in past year 24% felt very knowledgeable 23% very interested in learning more >1/3 already making a lot of effort to reduce wasted food 43%: say it would be easy to reduce more

Reported reasons for throwing out milk Use my senses (72%) Use by date (39%) Sell by date (22%) 18% Thinking about how long the milk had been open 12% Thinking about how the milk had been stored Could the dairy industry educate consumers that this date is not a safety/spoilage concern, and is an indicator for stores?

What information do consumers need?

Retail changes consumers would like to see

Implications Avoid treating consumers as if they are completely new to the issue of wasted food Frame messages to focus on budgets Retail options preferred by consumers include resealable packages and smaller portions Clarify messages about food safety and freshness Expiration vs. sell by dates

54 Million Lbs. provided to local food banks 1 Million Servings provided to local food banks

Focus on food waste Kroger s zero waste program generates more revenue than it costs to haul 30

Innovation & Partnership

Innovation & Partnership

Strategic Dairy Collaboration Support food waste reduction efforts for retail & processors Kroger & Innovatio n Center Support dairy Industry in expansion of biogas roadmap Purpose: Partnership to identify geographic opportunities for diverting food waste from Kroger facilities to new, dairy-based anaerobic digester(s)

Kroger/DMI Opportunity Mapping 32

Drivers of Waste in Dairy Value Chain Inefficient systems Packaging choices Use by /sell by dates Customer Perceptions Optimization Tradeoffs
