3 About Live Well. Be Well. Monroe County Health Department s Live Well. Be Well. program is led by a Health Educator, a Registered Nurse, and a Registered Dietitian. All of us want to live healthier, but may be unsure where to start. The Live Well. Be Well. team is here to help you make healthier meal choices, be more physically active and understand common chronic illnesses that face our community every day. 5 Living with Diabetes Join a diabetes support group with monthly presentations from a Registered Dietitian, Health Educator, or guest speaker to help manage your health. There is always time at the end for questions and discussion. The group meets on the third Wednesday of every month (excluding July, August, and December). Location: Monroe Home Care Shoppe 474 N. Telegraph Rd., Monroe Time: 7:00 8:30 p.m. Price: Free Call to RSVP! May 16th This month, health educator Jamie Eathorne, MPH will lead an interactive MyPlate activity! We will discuss the nutritional benefits of the five MyPlate groups and practice carbohydrate counting with examples from each. June 20th Join the Live Well. Be Well. dietitian to discuss American Diabetes Association Diabetes Superfoods! Learn health benefits of these foods and ideas for incorporating them into your daily intake! 6 Nutrition Mindful Eating Workshop Healthy eating is not just about what we eat, but also how we think about what we eat and our relationship to food. Join our Live Well. Be Well. dietitian to learn and explore concepts of mindful eating that can give you a new way to look at food, as well as help create positive eating experiences that can contribute to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Date: 5/2/18 Location: Monroe County Health Department 2353 S. Custer, Monroe Time: 5:30-6:30 p.m. Price: FREE, pre-registration is encouraged Orange Oatmeal Pancakes! Recipe courtesy of Cooking Matters, available at: Serving Size Serves 6, 2 (4-inch) pancakes per serving Ingredients ½ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup whole wheat flour ½ cup quick oats 1 Tablespoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt 1 large egg ¾ cup orange juice ½ cup nonfat milk 2 Tablespoons canola oil Non-stick cooking spray Instructions 1. In a large bowl, combine flours, oats, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. 2. In another large bowl, crack egg. Beat lightly with a fork. 3. Add orange juice, milk, and canola oil to egg. Mix well. 4. Coat large skillet with non-stick cooking spray. Heat over medium-high heat. 5. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. Stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. Do not overmix. 6. Pour ¼ cup batter into hot pan for each pancake. Adjust heat as needed to avoid burning. 7. Flip pancakes when bubbles appear on top of the batter and the edges are slightly browned, about 3-4 minutes. Cook until second side is slightly browned, about 2-3 minutes more. 6

If interested, your blood sugar will be taken before and after the walk. Did you know? Child restraints are often used incorrectly. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, 73% of car seats are not used or installed correctly. Fortunately, correctly used car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71%. Bring your car seat manual and your vehicle manual if you have them and learn proper installation techniques. Please allow at least 30 minutes per car seat. By appointment only. 7

10 A Summer Sweet Treat Healthier S mores! S mores are a popular warm weather treat. This summer, try our Live Well. Be Well. Healthier S mores! They can satisfy your craving for a sweet treat in one perfect portion controlled snackable sandwich. Use your imagination to add in healthy extras for a fun variety that will add s more nutrition! Healthier S mores Tips! Use miniatures sizes for your chocolate. Why? Portion control! Try dark chocolate vs. milk chocolate. Why? More antioxidants! But we still have to be mindful of portion control. Add fruit: try sliced strawberries or bananas. Why? Fruit adds fiber! You ll stay satisfied longer after your sweet snack! Add peanut (or other nut) butter. Why? Nut butters add protein! Protein also helps keep you satisfied longer! Enjoy with a glass of non-fat or low-fat milk. Why? Milk contains great protein! The extra protein will help you stay satisfied even longer! Plus milk provides calcium and vitamin D! No campfire? Use your microwave!
