1 HWS-PLS.708 Facilitator s Guide Suggested book: Rodeo Ron and the Milkshake Cows By: Rowan Clifford Length of Session-30 minutes Summary of Book Rodeo Ron and his Milkshake Cows visit the town of Cavity. In Cavity, all the adults and children only drink soda. The owners of the soda bar, Frothy and Fruity, challenge Rodeo Ron to a shake off. Rodeo Ron wins the first three rounds of the shake off with a strawberry milkshake, banana milkshake, and a blueberry milk shake. Frothy and Fruity get so mad that they start shaking and burping until they explode. After the contest is over, the crowd learns that the green cow produces plain, white milk. The town of Cavity changes the soda bar to a milk bar. They get their white smiles and healthy teeth back. If they do need to burp, they have learned to say pardon afterwards. Concepts Introduced in Book Drinking soda will ruin your teeth and make you burp. Milk tastes good and improves the health of your teeth. Objectives Students will make healthy food choices. Students will eat a variety of foods. Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Primary Youth Health Prepare a recipe for sampling. Incorporate other reinforcement activities if time allows. Discussion Questions What foods can you think of that are red? What foods can you think of that are yellow? What foods can you think of that are blue? What foods can you think of that are green? Why are the kids burping? What do you think the green cow eats? Why do the people in Cavity have dirty brown stumps instead of bright, white smiles? What does bicarbonate of soda do? Which cow do you think Rodeo Ron is going to use for strawberry? What flavor do you think the green cow will be? What do cows eat? What other parts of your body does milk help? Materials Needed CD player Danceable music such as Shake Rattle and Roll Suggestions for Facilitator Read the book Rodeo Ron and His Milk shake Cows. Incorporate some of the discussion questions as you read the story. Play Shake-It-Up.

2 Reinforcement activities Rodeo Ron Milkshake in a Bag Each person will get to make their own milk shake/smoothie in a bag. Equipment Measuring spoons, for milk and juice concentrate ¼ cup measuring cups Heavy-duty snack size closeable plastic bags and straws (one per person) Ingredients ¼ cup plain or vanilla yogurt 1 tablespoon low fat milk 2 teaspoons frozen fruit juice concentrate (thawed) 1. Place ingredients in bag.,seal tightly. 2. Squish the bag until all the ingre dients are mixed. Insert a straw in the bag and drink. Serving size: 1/4 Yeild:1 Nutrition Facts: Calories, 70, calories from fat, 5; 0 g saturated fat, 5 mg cholesterol, 45 mg sodium, 14 g carbohydrate, 0 dietary fiber, 12 g, sugar, 3 g protein, 2% Vitamin A, 4% Vitamin C., 10% calcium, 0% iron. [CD-ROM] Child and Adult Care Food Program Reimbursable Snack Ages 3 to 5 need ½ cup fruit or 0.5 ounce crackers to qualify Ages 6 to 12 need ¾ cup fruit or 1 ounce crackers to qualify Fruit Shake up Each person may make their own Fruit Shake-Up Equipment Container with secure lid ( try the Ziploc brand container: Twist n Loc ) 1 cup measuring cup (for fruit) Forks ¼ dry measuring cup (for yogurt) Liquid measuring cup (for milk) Whisk (optional) Small drink cups Ingredients 1 cup fresh or frozen fruit ¼ cup low-fat yogurt ¼ cup low-fat milk 1. Mash fruit into bottom of container. 2. Add yogurt and milk. Tighten lid. Shake until well blended, whip with a whisk or fork. Nutrition Facts: 150 calories, 15 calories from fat, 0g saturated fat, 5 mg cholesterol, 70 mg sodium, 32 mg carbohydrate, 4 g fiber, 26 g sugar, 5 g protein, 6% Vit. A, 8% Vitamin C, 15% calcium, 2% iron. Child and Adult Care Food Program Reimbursable Snack Ages 6 to 12 need to have a 1 ounce crackers added to qualify Shake-It Up (physical activity) Have students line up around the room.instruct them that when the music starts to move to the music and pretend they are shaking themselves up like the cows in the book. The one who shakes it up the best gets to be the recipe helper(s). (Depending on the recipe used, let student help pass out bags or if using the shaker, let them shake the containers.) Dairy Match Up Have students work in teams of two to three. Duplicate a set the Dairy Match Game Cards for each team. Have students mix cards and place face down on the desk. Students will take turns turning over two cards at a time, trying to create a match. Note: For the preschool age use a limited amount of the cards. Make it more challenging for older students by using all the cards. Jenga Jenga by Hasbro is a good activity for older students to play in groups of four. As the players pull wooden blocks from the stack, it can represent calcium being pulled from your bones. As the stack or your bones become more porous, the structure/bones will crash or break. Calcium Challenge The object of the activity is to match the bag of packing peanuts (representing the milligrams of calcium) with the appropriate food model. Use the Calcium Challenge handout to prepare this activity. 2 For preschool age you may want to use only dairy

3 products. For the older student use more of the food models/labels to identify and guess how much calcium is in the product. Consider pulling in some juice examples and possibly soft drinks to show the difference. Think Your Drink Before Rodeo Ron came to town, the people were only drinking soft drinks. Down load the Think Your Drink display from Lexington- Fayette County Health Department or contact Jackie Walters The purpose of the display is to visualize the amount of sugar in a variety of drink. Milk Challenge Can you tell how much fat is in the milk when you taste it? Many people can t. Instead of preparing a snack for large groups, consider doing a milk tasting challenge. Offer each person two or more varieties of milk and test their ability to place them in order of milk fat. Mark cups with letters to identify the type of milk they are offered. Place 2 tablespoons of each variety of milk in a small, white cup to sample. To make the display more interactive, allow students to measure the amount of sugar contained in popular beverages. Extend the learning activity by multiplying the amount consumed in a week, month, and/or year. Be sure to reinforce to students that the sugar being used has been recycled and not fit to consumer.
