1 SUPPORT CAREGIVERS WHEN THEY NEED IT THE MOST Providing full-time care for an older loved one is a selfless job many of us would readily take on if needed, but it comes with its own set of challenges and frustrations. A recent report from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine said caregiver recognition and support is one of the most significant challenges facing the U.S. s growing older population and their families. About 18 million Americans provide care for a relative 65 or older. Many of those caregivers sacrifice their own personal health and finances to adequately care for their loved one. In some cases, the caregiver puts their career on hold. The National Academies report that caregivers who are over age 50 and stop working to care for a loved one lose on average more than $300,000 in lost wages and benefits. This figure does not factor in the lost Social Security benefits caregivers will have at retirement due to a lower earnings history. If you are a caregiver, remember to take care of your physical, mental and emotional health. Don t be afraid to ask for help from friends and relatives. Consider joining a caregiver support group to share your story with others and find helpful resources. If you are not a caregiver but know someone who is, you can help lighten their load. Be a friend. Listen to their concerns, and let them vent. It can help relieve some of their stress and it can give you some good ideas of ways you can further assist them. Caregivers often do not ask for help from others, even when stress and fatigue consume them. Sometimes, it may be better to just show up and offer to help with a particular task or drop by unannounced with a home-cooked dinner. Offer to watch the loved one for an hour or two, so the caregiver can run errands or enjoy a movie or walk outdoors. If the caregiver is also a parent, offer to help pick up or drop off their kids from school or extracurricular activities. More information on local caregiver support efforts is available at the Floyd County Extension office. 8 SMART STRATEGIES TO SLICE AWAY AT CALORIES FOR THE SEASON Cu ng calories during the Holidays does not have to be difficult. Many individuals gain approximately four extra pounds during these mes of fes vi es and family gatherings. This may not seem like a lot but if this weight is kept on then it can accumulate with each passing year. The following sugges ons should help you slice away at some of the calories that are so easy to accumulate during the Holidays. Lighten your holiday beverages. Drink alcohol in modera on. Remember that calories from alcoholic beverages count. A 12 ounce, regular beer contains 150 to 200 calories, wine coolers contain 180 to 200 and 1½ ounces of cordial or liqueur contains 160 calories. When you drink, alternate each alcoholic beverage with a glass of water. Seasonal drinks such as eggnogs, apple cider and Holiday punches are high in sugar and some are high in fat. As much as possible, make these drinks at home. Use low-fat milk for eggnogs. Apple cider can be lightened by using low-sugar apple juice and adding cinnamon s cks, nutmeg, bay leaf, cloves and even whole cranberries to get the tradi onal flavor while cu ng back on the calories. Replacing sodas and fruit drinks with diet sodas, unsweetened teas or water are effec ve calorie-cu ng strategies. Limit toppings on drinks or use the low-fat versions. Watch out for sweet treats and desserts. Try using a low-calorie version of some of your favorite treats. Sharing a serving of dessert with a friend can help you cut back on calories while s ll enjoying dessert. Reduce your fat intake. Fats provide more calories than sugar and starches. It is a concentrated form of energy. Using foods that are grilled and baked instead of fried can cut a person s fat intake considerably. Trimming excess fat from meat and poultry also reduces fat intake. Baked goods and desserts may contain high amounts of fat, so watch your intake of these foods. Pay a en on to por on sizes. Por on sizes have go en much bigger in recent years and cu ng calories may mean learning what a standard por on size is. For example, one bread roll, ½ cup mashed potato, 3-4 ounces of cooked turkey, ½ cup stuffing. Share a meal with a friend when ea ng out. Choosing small or medium por ons, or se ng aside half of the food you ordered for another meal, can also be ways to cut por on sizes. Include more fruits and vegetables with your meal and eat them as snacks. In fact, it is a good idea to begin meals with a salad. Eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day to curb your appe te and reduce cravings. Stay involved in physical ac vity. Maintaining regular physical ac vity is one of the most important things we can do for our health and it helps offset some of the extra calories taken in during the Holidays.
