Turn to page 27 for profiles, stats, and more. Summer 2016 // Healthy Kids Magazine 7 healthy habits//play healthy habits//eat Holiday Meals Made Healthy LAURA CAUDILL, RD, RADY CHILDREN S CLINICAL DIETITIAN It s easy to celebrate the holidays with your health in mind. You can make small changes to traditional holiday menus to lower the calorie and fat content. Your friends and family won t notice the difference except in their waistlines. Total calories: 1,140 Total fat: 50 grams Phytochemicals are natural compounds that are beneficial to human health and found in plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, beans and grains Alpha- and beta-carotene: These powerful antioxidants are precursors for vitamin A, an important nutrient for vision, immune function, and skin and bone health. Good sources include autumnal foods like pumpkins, sweet potatoes and persimmons. Lutein and zeaxanthin: With direct benefits to vision and heart health, these can be found in broccoli, kale, spinach, Swiss chard and red peppers. 8 Healthy Kids Magazine // Fall 2016 Glucosinolates: Found in cruciferous vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli, these may help prevent certain cancers. SOURCE: LINUS PAULING INSTITUTE, OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Saving Face ORIGINAL MENU: 3 1/2 ounces roasted turkey with skin 1/2 cup stuffing 1/2 cup broccoli with hollandaise sauce 1/2 cup cranberry relish 1 medium crescent roll 1 slice pecan pie SUPER FOODS Resveratrol and anthocyanins: In addition to antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, they benefit heart health and may help prevent cancer. Find them in red, blue or purple veggies or fruits, such as grapes or cranberries. 50,000 copies Compare this traditional holiday menu with its leaner version from the American Dietetic Association Complete Food and Nutrition Guide. The latter contains nearly half the calories and less than half the fat; quite a difference without a loss of flavor. (FOODS TO TRY) Distribution Nothing ruins a beach day like sunburn, and there s more to preventing one than just SPF. Here s what the Rady Children s Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology team advises for keeping kids safe from the sun this summer while still having fun. LEANER MENU: 3 1/2 ounces roasted turkey, skinless 1/2 cup wild rice pilaf 1/2 cup broccoli with lemon juice 1/4 cup cranberry relish 1 whole-grain roll 1 slice pumpkin pie Total calories: 735 Total fat: 20 grams Seek shade! Double up. Repel the rays. The sun s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Be aware of the time of day, head to shade as much as possible, and stay covered up when in the sun. Hats, clothing such as swim rash guards, and long-sleeved shirts can protect your skin from the rays. Apply broadspectrum, waterresistant sunscreen to exposed skin to block UVA and UVB rays. And reapply it every two hours! Sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are the only shades worth wearing and are most effective when paired with a wide-brimmed hat. 25,000 to San Diego Magazine subscribers 25,000 to Rady Children s Hospital affluent donors and pediatrician offices in the Primary Children s Medical Group 10 Healthy Kids Magazine // Summer 2016 Connect with us on social
