1 I Am Not a Nugget: The Vegetarian Revolution Have you ever seen a baby cow? Maybe at a petting zoo? Have you seen how innocently wide-eyed they are, eager to explore the world, all fuzzy and small? That cow, or one exactly like it, is being eaten in a hamburger at this very minute. The average American eats meat; maybe a hot dog, or a sausage link, or a nice, sizzling slice of bacon. But some people become vegetarians, meaning they don t consume meat. Although some people think becoming vegetarian is unnecessary, cliché, or even unhealthy because of supposed lack of protein, eating a vegetarian diet is actually just as good, even a bit better, than a normal diet for the following reasons: animals aren t condemned to death for vegetarian food, the diet does have sufficient amounts of protein and nutrients, and overall, vegetarians are healthier in general. While the word is that animals are put to sleep humanely and painlessly while being manufactured for food, that s definitely not the case. Cows are crudely injected with Bovine DNA Recombinant Formula, a noxious, horrendous substance that causes their cells to work rapidly overtime, leaving them exhausted; they re cramped in crowded crates, musty and filthy, packed so tightly together with other animals that they can t turn around, lie down, or even take a single step for weeks on end. Unjustly deprived of exercise, sunlight, veterinary care, and even proper food, they are cruelly slaughtered after being tortured and malnourished. Chickens are force-fed chemicals to make them lay larger eggs faster. This chemical has been known to cause cancer in animals, but no one cares about the pain animals go through. They re kept awake almost twenty-four hours a day under harsh bright lights. Over 25 billion animals are killed

2 annually just so we can indulge in pork chops, meatballs, and fried chicken that s 3.5 times the world s population. The average meat-eater is responsible for about 100 animal deaths a year. In fact, as you ve been reading this, almost 100,000 chickens have been murdered for food (not to mention other types of animals like pigs and cows). Not only does vegetarianism prevent this cruelty, it also has all the nutrients and protein of a regular diet, maybe even more. A number of people believe that meat diets have large amounts of protein, which is essential to human health. Sure, that is true, but you can still get the right amount of protein while not eating meat. Fake meat products, like veggie burgers, taste pretty much like normal meat, but they re made with soy protein, equivalent to regular protein and just as good-tasting. However, protein found in meats, as opposed to vegetable proteins, more closely resemble human proteins. Vegetarians can also obtain nutrients from foods like nuts, eggs, beans, and peas, which all contain vitamin B12 protein. Whole wheat grains that can be found in oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and other whole grain products have healthy amounts of protein also. There s even more benefits to being a vegetarian; along with receiving sufficient amounts of vitamins and such, vegetarians are overall healthier than people with regular diets. The main concern for vegetarianism is its supposed impact on physical growth and development. But most vegetarians get more than enough nutrition, and they ll generally be better off in the long run. Studies show that vegetarians are 32 percent less likely to contract a heart disease than people with regular diets. Not eating meat also slashes down the risk of cancer by 12 percent; also, vegetarians tend to exercise more and drink more water. Average Americans with normal diets consume more than

3 enough protein the only essential nutrient that Americans consume more than enough of, due to our tendency to eat an abundance of meat. Cutting back on meat eating stabilizes the level of protein down to a perfect amount. It is clearly evident that vegetarian diets have a distinct advantage over meat-eating diets. It s essential to know the facts on vegetarianism before presupposedly cancelling out the idea. It minimizes animal deaths for food; it has more than enough vitamins and sufficient protein, and you tend to be healthier all around as a vegetarian. Next time you are feeling a craving for a bacon cheeseburger, imagine an innocent pair of pigs and calves being slaughtered for food. Imagine all the health benefits you would earn if you opted for something without that extra meat. Tell others about the choice of becoming a vegetarian. The benefits for the world are unfathomable every time someone decides to put down the chicken leg, steak, or beef jerky and veg out!
