Our focused investments have invented or improved thousands of lifesaving medical and health advancements. 5 Accelerating Science for Extraordinary Impact The AHA is embarking on a new frontier in science and research. Cardiovascular medicine stands on the verge of a revolutionary shift for patients from one-size-fitsall toward tailored prevention and treatment. Leveraging next-gen medicine, infusing cutting-edge technologies, and bringing previously-siloed disciplines together, we re shaping the future of health faster. The AHA Institute for Precision Cardiovascular Medicine TM The first entity focused exclusively on advancing precision medicine for cardiovascular care, which integrates an individual s genetics, environment and lifestyle through key initiatives, including My Research Legacy TM, where individuals donate lifestyle and genetic information, and AHA Precision Medicine Platform, a data marketplace for the research community. One Brave Idea TM, a bold new research enterprise, funded by the AHA, Verily and AstraZeneca, with the most promising plan to end coronary heart disease in the next five years. The historic initiative will explore multiple approaches including genetic and molecular risk factors, wearable technologies, environmental monitoring, and more. Strategic Focused Research Networks A multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary collaboration focused on a single strategic issue, including arterial fibrillation, hypertension, health disparities, prevention, obesity, children, stroke, and more. Local Research Grants The historical cornerstone of the AHA has been providing foundational funding for heart disease and stroke research across the country. Black residents are more than twice as likely to die from heart disease as Hispanic residents, and 50% more likely to die from a stroke than White residents.

10 Changing Policies and Systems CPR creating HEALTHY COMMUNITIES from the inside out pumping heart health into healthcare Of the more than 425,000 sudden cardiac arrests that happen each year 90% are fatal and about 70% happen in a home or residence. CPR, if performed immediately, can double or triple the chances of survival! That means families, students and colleagues must be equipped to save lives in homes, schools, offices and public places. The AHA trains the most people, 22 million worldwide, in CPR annually. You can be a lifesaver, too! CPR Anytime (Hands-Only Instruction for Adults & Children) CPR Anytime for Infants CPR in Schools Training Kit CPR in Sports Training Kit CPR Kiosk The AHA works with hospitals and health care providers to improve the quality of training, systems and technology. When medical professionals apply the most up-to-date evidencebased treatment guidelines, patient outcomes improve. Get With The Guidelines A suite of five healthcare quality improvement programs that help ensure the most recent scientific guidelines are implemented for heart failure, stroke, resuscitation, AFib and coronary artery disease. Half of the nation s hospitals follow these guidelines, of which 40 hospitals implement one or more of these guidelines in North Texas. Resuscitation Quality Improvement More than 200,000 cardiac arrests happen inside U.S. hospitals every year yet less than 25% of patients survive. Designed specifically for practicing medical professionals, this innovative on-site CPR training program, with quarterly skills practice, was piloted in North Texas and is available to hospitals nationwide. Mission: Lifeline This program for hospitals and EMS agencies focuses on delivering the best possible care for high-risk, time-sensitive emergencies including heart attacks, cardiac arrests and strokes. From the 911 call center to emergency response and transport, arriving at the hospital, emergency room protocols through hospital discharge all systems of care must work quickly and seamlessly.

Little Hats, Big Hearts Volunteers knit tiny, red hats for newborns to raise awareness of congenital heart defects and prevention testing. Côtes du Coeur The AHA celebrates its lifesaving mission through the largest wine auction and celebrity chef dinner in the Southwest. The annual gala in Dallas brings people and palates together to help fund cures for heart disease and stroke. STEM Goes Red North Texas Inspiring middle school students to become future scientists who will be the ones to discover cures for heart disease and stroke. Heart Ball An evening filled with food and spirits, a live auction, music and mission to celebrate AHA s impact in Collin County.

Builders With Heart An industry-specific leadership council and campaign aimed at improving heart health within the high-risk construction industry. CycleNation By igniting North Texas to pedal together, we can start a health revolution. The annual outdoor, community-wide event in Dallas raises heart rates and vital funds for our lifesaving mission. Heart Challenge The largest education and fundraising event empowering better health of elementary students through jumping rope or playing basketball.
