The National Oral Health Conference (NOHC) was held in Cincinnati, Ohio, April 18-20, and was attended by several College of Dentistry faculty members, staff and students. (Left): Dr. Ray Kuthy (Preventive & Community Dentistry) received the American Association of Public Health Dentistry s Distinguished Service Award at the conference and Ms. Daisy Patino (Family Dentistry), received third place recognition in the Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health competition. In addition to Dr. Kuthy and Ms. Patino, attendees included faculty Drs. Pete Damiano, Susan McKernan, Michelle McQuistan, Julie Reynolds, and John Warren (Preventive & Community), Dr. Justine Kolker (Operative Dentistry) and Ms. Cathy Skotowski (Pediatric Dentistry); graduate students Nyla Balakrishnan (dental public health), Aparna Ingleshwar (dental public health), Mary Kelly (dental public health), Amy Lesch (pediatric dentistry), Paula Ortega-Verdugo (operative dentistry) and Jennifer Sukalski (dental public health); and dental students: Sophia Chen (D2), Jennifer Feingold (D2), Melani Fulton (D2), Isabella Newcomer (D3), Sean McGivern (D3), and Deborah Yu (D2). Highlights of the conference included keynote addresses by Dr. Robert Lustig (University of California, San Francisco) on the role of sugar in dental caries, obesity, diabetes and liver disease, and Dr. Michael Shermer (a science writer for Scientific American and editor-inchief of Skeptic) on the misunderstanding of science and pseudoscience. There was also a trip to a Cincinnati Reds game. National Oral Health Conference, continued on 2

2 Page 2 National Oral Health Conference, continued from 1 Karen Wallace Honored for 40 Years of Service During AAAE Iowa Reception (Above): Sean McGivern (D3) is seen with Dr. Timothy Iafolla, his mentor from his NIDCR Dental Student Fellowship, which Sean completed in Sean presented State-Level Relationship between Dentists CHIP Participation and Reimbursement Rates at the NOHC meeting. Co-authors on his research were Drs. Steven Levy and Peter Damiano (Preventive & Community Dentistry) who are also Sean s mentors. On Thursday, April 7, 2016, during the American Association of Endodontics Iowa Reception in San Francisco, the Endodontic Department honored Karen Wallace for her 40 years of service. Over 100 people, including faculty, current residents, past endodontic graduates and many more, were there for this celebration. During her 40 years in the Department of Endodontics, she had eight bosses: Drs. Arne Bjorndal, Mo Kowassah, Wally Johnson, Ken Zakariasen, Richard Walton, Eric Rivera, William Johnson, and Fabricio Teixeira. Gibson Square Flag Dedication to be Held Friday, April 29, from 12:00-12:20 The University of Iowa is paying homage to Armed Services veterans by creating an outdoor garden and memorial area near the Main Library in Gibson Square. The Gibson Square Veterans Tribute is supported by Facilities Management made possible through collaboration with the campus community and representatives of the Armed Services. The tribute includes special garden landscaping, seating, memorial plaques to each of the Armed Services branches, and a flagpole supporting the American flag. Dan Heater, director of Building & Landscape Services and U.S. Navy veteran, says, The Gibson Square Veterans Tribute is intended to provide the campus and community with a contemplative space dedicated to remembering and honoring those who served our country. The Gibson Square flag dedication will be held Friday, April 29, from noon to 12:20 pm. 3 Page 3 Research at the College of Dentistry: An Interview with Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics How did you become interested in research? By being a clinician, one positively impacts a small community. By being a teacher, one impacts a slightly larger community (by sharing your knowledge) but only by research and publication of findings one s impact is much broader. The sheer size of the impact and the reach that good quality research can produce is what inspired me to pursue research. I also had so many great mentors and collaborators who reinforced my interest in research. What is it about biomaterials and tissue engineering that interests you? Biomaterials and bone tissue regeneration research is translational in nature. Any product that comes out of this research has the potential to impact millions across the world, not just with dental needs but also with orthopedic needs. My research primarily focuses on bone regeneration using novel DNA- and RNA-based biomaterials but I also focus on periodontal regeneration to an extent. With more and more implants being placed, we hope to develop materials and strategies that will lead to predictable bone regeneration, eliminating the need to harvest a patient s own bone.
