1 NEWSLETTER President s Letter LCDS Officers for 2011 Spring? Unfortunately, as I write the second President s letter for the LCDS newsletter (in May) the weather and temperature haven t changed much from March. The Lorain County Dental Society received a certificate from the Ohio Dental Association for participation in the 2011 Give Kids a Smile program. Thank you to everyone who contributed. The Staff Appreciation dinner was well attended; hopefully all staff members came away with a gift card. (Thank you, Dr. Shuba.) I would also like to thank Dr. Mary Kay Shuba for putting together a very informative CE curriculum for Our upcoming LCDS events include a night at the Crushers game on Friday, June 10th at 7:05 and the LCDS golf outing at Oberlin Golf Club on June 23rd. 2 Things to Consider about Dental Staffing What do you do when a staff member calls in sick or takes a vacation day? Do you have enough staff to cover the absence? Do you have a list that you call through until you can find someone to fill in? Or do you cancel the patients and hope they are understanding? An option that is available but often underutilized is using the services of a dental staffing agency. Some agencies specialize in dental offices while others will staff both dental and medical. Most offer 24 hour emergency placement services. For longer term assignments, you can choose from temporary, temp to hire or permanent placement. What are the advantages to working with an agency? First, they have access to a larger number of qualified individuals. Their database may include dentists, dental hygienists, chairside assistants, EFDAs, and front office staff. Second, the agency takes care of screening, interviewing, verifying licensure and credentials, and checking references. Some agencies will handle the payroll functions as well not just issuing the paycheck and paying the necessary taxes, but also covering worker s comp, unemployment benefits and professional liability coverage. Once you ve decided to use a dental staffing agency, you ll want to find one that is a good fit for your practice. Here are some questions that you can ask yourself and the agency you are considering: When are you most likely to use their services? Emergency call-offs only; long-term coverage for vacations, maternity leave, jury duty etc.; or as a way to pre-screen a potential permanent employee. Are they a dental specific agency or do they have a specific dental division? Do you want them to cover payroll and other employee related liabilities? What type of screening and interviewing process do they use? How in-depth is it? What type of placement options do they offer? Will those fit with the way you think you ll use their services? Do they have a temp to hire option and if so, is there a discounted charge or no charge after a certain number of hours have been worked? Will the agency take the time to get to know you and your practice philosophy so that they can consistently find matches that fit with your practice?
