1 James Brown obtained a joint PhD from UCT and Vrije University Medical Center (Amsterdam) in April His PhD evaluated the effectiveness of the BokSmart program in reducing rugby- related injuries in South Africa. James is now a Post- Doctoral Fellow at the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, UCT, where he has extended his research on the prevention of injuries in rugby and is funded by both the BokSmart program and Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players Fund. James has 12 peer- reviewed publications, 8 of which are specific to injury prevention in rugby, and is co- founder of a blog, which translates rugby research to a lay audience ( Dr. Vincent Gouttebarge is a former professional footballer (14 years in France and The Netherlands) being nowadays assistant professor at the Academic Medical Center (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands). After his PhD in medicine (clinimetrics), Vincent focussed on the sustainable physical, mental and social health of both current and retired professional i.e. elite athletes. At present time, Vincent is leading international projects in several professional sports such as cricket, football, Gaelic sports, ice hockey and rugby. Vincent is also the Chief Medical Officer of FIFPro, the World Players Union representing more than 65,000 professional footballers worldwide.
2 Sarah Mc Fie completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in physiology and genetics, and an Honours degree, in Neuroscience, at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Sarah is currently undertaking a PhD aiming to identify genetic and non- genetic risk factors for sport- related concussion risk, severity and prolonged recovery at UCT s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Wilbur Kraak is a lecturer at the Department of Sport Science, Stellenbosch University, with Coaching Science and Performance Analysis as his focus areas. Wilbur is a World Rugby Coach Educator, SARU BokSmart trainer and busy completing his World Rugby Level 3 coaching course. He is currently the head coach of one of the top rugby clubs in the Western Province. Wilbur is completing a PHD in Sport Science (focus on Performance Analysis) at Stellenbosch University. He has published several sport specific papers related to rugby. Steve den Hollander is an intern biokineticist at Grayhound Training, and Victoria Hospital. He completed his honours degree in exercise science and biokinetics at the University of Cape Town. Steve is currently completing an MSc in skill assessment in Rugby Union at the University of Cape Town.
3 Nicholas Burger is a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town?s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, based at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. Nicholas is currently in the second year of his doctorate exploring the aetiology of injuries in rugby union, particularly the relationship between tackle technique and associated contact- related injuries. He has appeared as the first author and co- author of peer- reviewed manuscripts in prestigious sports science and medicine journals. In addition to his studies, Nicholas works as a conditioning coach at Villager F.C. which is the second oldest rugby club in South Africa. Nicola Sewry is a Biokineticist at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. Nicola has a keen interest in rugby, having completed her Honours and MSc theses within the rugby field. During this time she has worked with the University of Cape Town and Villagers Rugby Club First XV in both a biokinetics and strength and conditioning role. She is currently completing her PhD in injury prevention in association with BokSmart at the University of Cape Town. She has two publications currently in review, both in rugby- related research.
4 Professor Mike Lambert is a professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Department of Human Biology, UCT, which is based at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands. He is the editor of the South African Journal of Sports Medicine and has published over 220 peer- reviewed papers and chapters in books. He has a research interest in factors affecting performance and fatigue. Franclo Henning is a consultant neurologist at Tygerberg Academic Hospital and senior lecturer in neurology at Stellenbosch University. His clinical and research interest is in the field of neuromuscular diseases, in particular motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and muscle disorders. He is chairman of the MND/ALS Association of South Africa and runs a Multidisciplinary ALS clinic at Tygerberg Academic Hospital. Franclo is part of an international collaboration studying ALS in Africa, and also has an active collaboration with the myology laboratory at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.
5 Jason Tee is a sport scientist, strength and conditioning coach and rugby coach. Jason's particular area of interest is the real- world application of sport science research in professional sporting environments and practical effects on performance. He is currently completing a PHD in injury risk management in professional rugby union players. In his role as a youth- performance coach, Jason has overseen the development of a number of players through to senior professional level. Dr Wayne Viljoen is currently the Senior Manager: Rugby Safety at the South African Rugby Union (SARU), manages the BokSmart National Rugby Safety program, and has been working for SARU in this capacity since Dr Viljoen is also a Section Editor for the Injury Prevention section of World Rugby s Rugby Science Network since its inception, and is currently also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Cape Town, Department of Human Biology, Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. He has published amongst others in peer- reviewed scientific journals, books, chapters of books and in lay magazines. Prior to taking up the position at the South African Rugby Union, Dr Viljoen was employed by the University of Cape Town as Lecturer and Course Coordinator for the BSc (MED) Hons (Exercise Science) Biokinetics degree.
6 Clint Readhead is the Senior Manager: Medical at the South African Rugby Union (SARU). His role includes areas of development, research, legislation, protocols and policies, education and daily operations. He is currently also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Cape Town, Department of Human Biology, Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Since taking up his current role, he has been integrally involved in rugby injury- related research, and has co- authored a number of research papers on this topic. He has a B.Sc. Degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town and has qualification in Advanced Management (MAP programme) from Wits Business School. Before joining he worked as the Team Physiotherapist for the 2007 World Rugby (formerly known as IRB) Rugby World Cup Winning Springboks (South African National Senior Men s Rugby Team). Dr Sharief Hendricks. Research Fellow at University of Cape Town Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. Research interest - How athletes can safely and effectively execute skill, and communicating this knowledge to coaches and trainers. 7 Lovemore Kunorozva. PhD candidate, University of Cape Town, Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine and Molecular and Cell Biology Department. Research Interest- PERIOD3 gene Association with Illness, Injury, Performance and Re- entrainment in Travelling Sports Teams. In general assessing performance, incidences of illness and injury in individuals with different PER3 Variable Number Tanderm Repeat (VNTR) polymorphisms. Furthermore, how these individuals differ in the way they adapt/ deal with jet lag symptoms in new environments following trans- meridian air travel to the east (AUS or NZ) or the west. But at the conference I will focus more on the effects of trans- meridian air travel on illness, injury and performance. Justin Durant is the manager of the Discovery High performance Centre at SSISA. Justin has had the privilege of being the conditioning specialist for the South African National Cricket, Soccer, Hockey and Olympic team. In addition, he has trained the Western Province Currie Cup rugby team and the SAU19 rugby team at three world cups. Justin is currently completing a PHD in talent identification at the University of Cape Town. He has published several sport specific papers related to cricket, soccer, rugby and Hockey.
