Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI Dear Delegates, Following on from our very successful SEMSEP 2016/2017 programme, On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to the Royal College of Surgeons today for the second Module in our Sports and Exercise Medicine Structured Educational Programme (SEMSEP) 2017/2018. The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine. The modules will be delivered during the academic year, and will address a number of topics. Our first module this year was on Concussion, and was very well attended. There are many athletes who compete who have concomitant medical conditions. This module will give expert advise on the management of athletes at all levels with a variety of medical conditions. The issue of TUE s, which has never been more topical will also be addressed. I hope you will all enjoy today s module and thank you again for supporting the Faculty. 4 Speakers Biographies DR COLIN DOHERTY Dr Colin Doherty is a consultant neurologist at St James s Hospital and Senior lecturer in Neurology at TCD. His undergraduate degree was awarded by UCD (1991) and he trained in Medicine and Neurology at St Vincent s and Beaumont Hospitals and later at the Partners Neurology Residency Programme at Harvard Medical School, Boston (Brigham and Women s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital), where he was Chief Resident in his final year ( ). He then completed Fellowships in Epilepsy and Cognition at MGH ( ). He has published widely the areas of brain imaging in epilepsy, the genetics of epilepsy, functional imaging of language, dementia, clinical epileptology and brain injury. He was a member of the Irish government s expert group on resource allocation in the health sector (2011) and was a member of the National Clinical Effectiveness Committee in Ireland since its inception in 2011 to He is a founder member and Medical Director of Epilepsy Research Ireland (ERI). He has been National Clinical Lead for the Epilepsy Care Programme in Ireland for the past 7 years, with a charge to develop epilepsy services nationally to improve quality of care, access for patients. DR ANTHONY O CONNOR Dr Anthony O Connor graduated in medicine from University College Cork in his hometown in He completed SHO training in Limerick before undertaking higher specialist training in Gastroenterology in Tallaght and St. James s Hospitals in Dublin. He was awarded an MD by Trinity College Dublin in 2012 for a thesis on the management of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric intestinal metaplasia with regard to gastric cancer prevention supervised by Professor Colm O Morain. Upon completion of his training in Ireland he worked as senior fellow in Crohn s and Colitis at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA before taking up an appointment as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in June 2014 and returning to Ireland in 2016 to an appointment as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Tallaght Hospital. His interests are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases especially Post-operative prophylaxis of Crohn s disease and Quality of Life for patients with IBD, the GI complications of cancer therapies, Upper Gastrointestinal Tract Bleeding, Helicobacter pylori infection and Gastric Cancer prevention. DR DIARMUID SMITH Dr Diarmuid Smith is a Consultant Endocrinologist in Beaumont Hospital since Completed his MD thesis in Kings College in London in 2002 in the area of hypoglycaemia. He has been the HSE national clinical lead for diabetes between 2011 and He was the secretary and chair of the diabetes section of the Irish Endocrine Society between 2005 to He is the current secretary of the Irish Endocrine Society and was associate medical director for Beaumont Hospital between 2014 to His research interests are in diabetes, hypoglycaemia and diabetic vascular disease and

5 he has been primary author or co-author in over 100 research publications. He has been involved with the Dublin Senior Football team and the St Vincent s Senior Hurling team for the last 3 years. PROFESSOR TREVOR DUFFY Professor Trevor Duffy is Consultant Rheumatologist at the Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown and the Hermitage Medical Clinic and is Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the RCSI. Following specialist training in Ireland he was a Rheumatology Fellow at the Hospital Universitaire Cantonal de Geneve where he subsequently became a Chef de Clinique. He has also spent time as Lead Clinical Director at Connolly Hospital. Professor Duffy was president of the IMO and has been chair member of the IMO Consultant Committee and the IMO NCHD Committee. He is also IMO delegate to the UEMS (Union Européan des Medicins Specialists), and sits on the European Board of Rheumatology. DR MICHAEL O MAHONY Dr Michael O Mahony is a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine in Galway University Hospitals. He graduated from UCC in 1996 and completed his initial training in Cork,Limerick and Dublin. He undertook Fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care in New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Appointed to faculty in Weill Cornell Medical College and Rockefeller University from He has an interest in Asthma and Sport and is a member of the Irish Universities Rugby Union Committee and IRFU 3rd level Committee. MS CORA CARRIGG Ms Cora Carrigg, BSc (Hons), has worked in the area of Anti-Doping since 2009, where she is involved with the administration of Therapeutic Use Exemption Applications. Cora works with athletes and their Doctors providing advice on the WADA List, TUE requirements and medical file preparation as well as assisting the TUE Committee with their day-to-day work. Working with Eirpharm.com and MIMS, Cora also provides assistance in relation to preparing their Drugs in Sport information. She has a Diploma in Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals from GMIT and a degree in Microbiology from NUIG where she previously specialised in microbial DNA profiling. DR JOSEPH GALVIN Dr Joseph Galvin is a cardiologist in Mater, Connolly and Mater Private Hospitals. He trained in Dublin, New York, Vermont and Boston in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. His particular interests include catheter ablation, device management of cardiac arrhythmias, syncope, inherited cardiac conditions and prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD).
