6 English - Thai 6 Thai Language Welcome to our new English Thai Phrasebook. This version of our very popular English Thai language guide book series tries to explain common expressions and phrases you most probably will come along in Thailand. It tries to cover most aspects of your visit. At the end of the book you will find the 1,500 most important key words & phrases indexed as dictionary for quick search and reference. The Romanized words in this book are only an approximation, as there are sounds in Thai which don t have an exact English equivalent. In addition it is important to learn the exact pronunciation from a Thai or you risk being misunderstood. Thai is a tonal language - so it is also essential to learn the correct tone when you learn the word. There are 5 tones. Romanized words that look the same can therefore have up to 5 different meanings. Correct pronunciation of the different tones: 1. middle tone: without symbol The different tones common tone, pronounced flat. All syllables without symbol should be pronounced flat in this book. e.g.: maa = come

7 Phrase Book 2. low tone: symbol: similar to middle tone voice drops lower than normal e.g.: mai = new 3. falling tone: symbol: 4. high tone: symbol: 5. rising tone: symbol: pronounced falling like an emphatic pronunciation in English e.g.: mai = not usually the most difficult. voice goes up higher than normal e.g.: maa = horse like the English question tone e.g.: maa = dog Polite syllables Whenever you speak Thai you should use the syllable khrap or kha at the end of the sentence. If you are male you use khrap and if you are female you use kha at the end of each sentence. 7

If you are male you use khrap and if you are female you use kha at the end of each sentence. How are you? Sabaai dee mai khrap (kha) Thanks, fine. Sabaai dee khrap (kha) What is your name? Khawp khun khrap (kha) Thank you, the same to you. Khawp khun khrap (kha), khun duai Questions Yes - No There is no easy answer for YES or NO in the Thai language. All depends on the asked question. One usually repeats the verb of the question to say YES or add the particle mai (=not) in front of the verb to say NO. One may also just use the particle khrap (kha) for saying YES or mai khrap (mai kha) for NO. 11
