1 The KING S Medium Term Plan Physical Education Y10 LC4 Programme Module Overarching subject Challenge question Lines of Enquiry A healthy, active lifestyle and your skeletal system. What is the impact of exercise on the skeletal system? Week 1: What is the role of the skeletal system? Week 2: What are the effects of exercise and physical activity on bones? Week 3: What is the importance of diet on the skeletal system? Week 4: What are the symptoms of injuries to the skeletal system? Week 5: Cognitive acceleration lesson & revision Week 6: Assessment lesson Week 7: Gap teaching from assessment analysis. Progress Topic Statement By the end of LC3 in Physical Education students must be able to: 1.2.5: Students should understand the impact of a healthy, active lifestyle on their skeletal system: Role of skeletal system during physical activity Function of skeletal system for movement, support and protection during physical activity Ranges of movement at hinge joint at elbow and knee, ball and socket joint at shoulder during physical activity (flexion, extension, rotation, abduction, adduction) Effects of regular participation in and long-term effects of participation in exercise and physical activity (increased bone density and strength of ligaments and tendons) Importance of weight-bearing exercise (exercises such as walking, running, tennis and aerobics) to prevent
2 osteoporosis The potential for injuries such as fractures (compound, greenstick, simple, stress) and joint injuries (tennis elbow, golfer s elbow, dislocation, sprain, torn cartilage), and their treatment using common techniques such as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) Diet (effect of calcium and vitamin D on bones) Week 1 1 hour lesson Assessment in week 6 will be against the above objectives. Gap teaching from analysis of assessments in week 7. Week 1: What is the role of the skeletal system? 1. Know and understand the functions of the skeletal system. 2. Recall and explain the movements of the joints. Hypothesis: Movement only occurs at the joints
3 Complete the worksheet on joints and the functions of the skeletal system. Week 2 1 hour lesson Week 2: What are the effects of exercise and physical activity on bones? 1. Know and understand the effects of exercise on the skeletal system. 2. Describe the effects of regular participation in and the long-term effects of participation in- exercise and physical activity.
4 Hypothesis: Osteoporosis can be prevented by completing weight-bearing exercise Research findings from The National Osteoporosis Society and answer the targeted questions on this. Week 3 1 hour lessons Week 3: What is the importance of diet on the skeletal system? 1. Understand how diet can affect performance and health of the skeletal system. 2. Recall the importance of a balanced diet and the link between dietary intake and performance.
5 Hypothesis: The healthier the diet, the stronger the skeletal system The mid-term assessment will be completed and peer-assessed by all students. Complete the exam style questions. Week 4 1 hour lessons Week 4: What are the symptoms of injuries to the skeletal system? 1. Understand how injuries can be prevented. 2. Evaluate how to treat potential injuries.
6 Hypothesis: The stronger your bones, the less chance of injury Complete exam style questions focusing on AO3 and extended answers (doodle-threedle practice) Week 5 Cognitive acceleration and revision This lesson will be dedicated to cognitive acceleration in order for students to master the topic and deepen their knowledge and understanding. The lesson will be centred on a challenge, which can only be mastered using an abstract idea. Success criteria will be determined after assessing the progress and needs of the pupils throughout the learning cycle.
7 Week 6 Revision for assessment next lesson. ASSESSMENT LESSON Gap Analysis Reinforcement Week 7 These weeks will be for gap reinforcement. From the assessments the lesson will be determined. The lesson will cover areas of weakness from the assessment. This will allow students to continue to develop their knowledge and also allow for deeper learning to take place. Extended Learning This will be in the form of REACH questions to challenge students in lessons beyond their target grade. They will be required to apply their knowledge from each week in order to solve these problems. Extended learning will also come in the form of access to websites, revision videos and additional independent assignments set at the right level, yet will challenge them to reach further.
