The theme of the congress was From High Evidence Based Dentistry to High Clinical Performances. The meeting was held January 27-28, 2012, in Milan, Italy. Dr. Stanford s presentation was titled New Technologies in Implant Prosthesis: Where Are We? 2 Page 2 Dr. Isabel Garcia to be Keynote Speaker on Local AADR Research Day (February 14, 2012) The UI College of Dentistry will be hosting the Local AADR Research Day on February 14, Keynote Speaker: On February 14, we will welcome our keynote speaker, Dr. Isabel Garcia (photo above), who is deputy director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. 5 THE INTERNATIONAL RECIPE EXCHANGE RETURNS! Page 5 As part of the UI 2012 Celebration of Human Rights and Diversity during the month of January, the College of Dentistry Diversity Committee again sponsored an international recipe exchange. The Committee asked Dentistry faculty, students, and staff to submit recipes that are accessible to the home cook but still have the authentic taste of the cuisine. Those submitting recipes were asked to include a brief statement describing why the recipe was typical of that heritage or culture and what it means to them. The Blue Zones Project originated from Governor Terry Branstad s challenge for Iowa to be the healthiest State by 2016 [Currently, Iowa ranks 19 th according to the Healthways Gallup Well-Being Index]. The term Blue Zones comes from the book, Blue Zones: Lessons For Living Longer from the People Who ve Lived the Longest, by Dan Buettner, National Geographic traveler, explorer, and author. Governor Branstad s challenge triggered a collaboration of the Blue Zones Foundation with Wellmark and Healthways for the Blue Zones Project, which involves the selection of 10 communities in Iowa to become Blue Zones demonstration sites. Having Iowa City be a Blue Zone site would be a great opportunity for the University of Iowa community, as outcomes could impact our culture of health and provide visual cues to wellness in the community in which we work and that some of us live in! The Iowa City Chamber of Commerce filed an application on January 4, 2012, to be a Blue Zones demonstration site. A decision on the community finalists will be made on February 10, Site visits will be made to finalists in late February mid-march The Iowa City Area needs your support, as citizen support and enthusiasm are important criteria for selection! What you can do.act Promptly.Register your support for the Iowa City Area to become a Blue Zones community! The process is simple and takes less than two minutes. 10 Page 10 Announcement: The Dental Pharmacy has recently purchased a new INR testing machine & is once again providing quick and accurate chair side INR testing for your patients on warfarin (Coumadin ). If you wish to obtain an INR prior to a dental procedure for a warfarin (Coumadin ) patient: Call the dental pharmacy prior to needing the INR to ensure availability of staff at: Please contact the pharmacy giving us as much notice as possible. Be prepared to give clinic name and operatory number or we can arrange to perform the INR at the Dental Pharmacy at South 306 DSB just prior to the appointment. The charge for each INR is $35, which is added to the patient s bill by the clinician treating the patient at that appointment. Reminder: Patients on dabagatrin (Pradaxa ) or clopidogrel (Plavix ) cannot be assessed for coagulability or perioperative bleeding risk using the INR test.
