She comes to us with over three years of private practice experience and has a vast knowledge of exodontia. She is a welcome addition to our team. Ashley graduated from West High School here in Iowa City and received her DA certificate from Hawkeye Community College. Ashley has a twin brother, Tyler. She also has a sister, Morgan, and brother, Travis, who incidentally are also twins! Ashley has recently become engaged to Matt. We are so pleased to have Ashley in our department, and we welcome her to the College of Dentistry. The Brody Award is named in honor of the late Michael J. Brody, former president of the UI Faculty Senate. The award recognizes faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the UI and the community. Dr. Drake has served on 23 university committees, including the Faculty Policy and Compensation Committee, the Faculty/Staff Budget Committee, the Judicial Commission, and the Government Relations Committee. He also served on the committee that completed this year s provost search, and he currently chairs the Committee on Selection of Higher Academic Officials. This summer, he was appointed senior associate to UI President Sally Mason. He has also served as president of the UI Faculty Senate.

Dr. Rebecca Slayton, professor and head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, was inducted as a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD) during its 82 nd Annual Convocation in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 10, The International College of Dentists is an honorary organization for the recognition of outstanding and meritorious service to the profession and community. Dr. Slayton was presented with a membership plaque, a gold lapel pin, and a gold key, which symbolizes fellowship for conspicuous service rendered the art and science of dentistry. Nearly 300 U.S. dentists were inducted into the college at this year s ceremony, which was witnessed by hundreds of members and guests. The ICD has chapters in more than 80 countries and has more than 11,000 members, including 6,500 in the U.S.

3 Page 3 College of Dentistry Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Held on October 14, 2011 The College of Dentistry celebrated the expansion and renovation of its facilities for patient care, research, and educational programming with public tours and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Dental Science Building (DSB) on Friday, October 14, A 33,000-square-foot addition to the building features the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Geriatric and Special Needs Clinic, the Faculty General Practice Clinic, and a multidisciplinary/clinical research area. The addition also houses the college s Department of Endodontics and its clinic and expands classroom and student space. The College of Dentistry s existing comprehensive biomedical research space in the DSB is being renovated in part with generous support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. The October 14 celebration was held during Dental Alumni Weekend. Guests enjoyed refreshments and took self-guided tours of the DSB. Remarks and the ribbon cutting followed at 4 pm. UI President Sally Mason; Dean David Johnsen; Lynette Marshall, president and CEO of the UI Foundation; and H. Garland Hershey, chair of the building campaign steering committee, spoke during the ribbon cutting. The addition is the first phase of a $62 million project to update and expand the college s facilities.
