1 HELENA INDIAN ALLIANCE NEWSLETTER MARCH2014

2 Page 2 HELENA IND IAN ALLIAN CE NEWSLETTER New Employee at HIA!! Hi, I m Julie Burrows, the new Enrollment Coordinator to help people apply for health care through the Affordable Care Act. I am from Helena, and recently became a grandma with the arrival of my daughter and her husband s cute baby boy. I have done a wide variety of things in my life, but my favorite hobby is watching animals and trying to figure out why they are doing what they re doing, and how and what they are communicating to each other. I look forward to helping people get health insurance they can afford, and hope you will stop in to the Helena Indian Alliance/Leo Pocha Clinic to see how the Affordable Care Act (also called Obamacare ) may be able to help you! And if I get distracted by a conversation between a magpie and a squirrel outside the window, you ll know why :) Julie B ext. 127 Time is getting short for people to enroll in the insurance marketplace. Enrolled members of a Federally Recognized Tribe can enroll when they want to--there is no deadline. For those who are not enrolled members of a Tribe, or for those that are not Native (yes, non-natives can enroll here at HIA as well), the deadline for signing up for insurance is March 31st. If you don't meet the deadline, the Feds will fine you. The person that can assist you here at HIA is Julie Burrows. Her schedule is: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1-5 and on Tuesday and Friday she is here from The benefits from having insurance are tremendous and the cost is very low, many people have found that they don't have to pay anything at all. Please enroll as soon as you can ext. 127 Julie B.

4 Page 4 H I A C L I N I C N E W S March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer is the nation s second leading cancer killer of men and women in the United States and a cause of considerable suffering among the 137,000 adults diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year. In 2010, over 52,000 Americans died from this cancer; however, when colorectal cancer is detected early, illness and death can be prevented. Along with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Helena Indian Alliance is committed to boosting public awareness about the importance of screening and treatment for colorectal cancer. The work-out area is now complete! We urge you to obtain a physical examination from our provider before using any exercise equipment or participating in any exercise activity. Prior to using the equipment you must sign the waiver & release form. Please see the clinic receptionist for more information. PLEASE NOTE: We are still having lot of NO-SHOWS for scheduled appointments; your appointment is scheduled so that we have enough time to meet your medical needs. If your appointment is inconvenient for you, please call the clinic immediately or at least 24 hours ahead of your scheduled time. If you do not notify our office within 24 hours and you do not show up for your scheduled appointment it will be noted in your chart that you have a No Show. An appointment not attended could have been used for another person needing medical assistance. Because we want to meet the needs of the community, effective immediately if you miss more than the allowed number of appointments you will not be able to obtain an appointment in the clinic for six months. (Per Policy and Procedures) **If you are 15 minutes late for your hour appointment, you will not be seen in the clinic that day. You will be asked to reschedule. **If you are 5 minutes late for your ½ hr. appointment, you will not be seen in the clinic that day. You will be asked to reschedule. 6 Page 6 HIA Tobacco Program An Evening with Ethno botanist, Ecologist and Historian Rosalyn LaPier (Blackfeet/Metis) March 18, :00 p.m. Leo Pocha Clinic Gym (501 Euclid Ave.) "The Blackfeet use different parts of plants roots, leaves and fruit for different purposes. The gathering and processing of plants was generally the responsibility of women. My grandmother learned which plants to pick and in what seasons by going into the hills with her grandmothers. She also learned how to process and preserve these plants for future use. My grandmother has handed down these same skills to younger generations... I once told her that my husband was making huckleberry milkshakes, and she gasped disapprovingly, They re medicine! " Rosalyn LaPier Ethnobotanist, Ecologist and Historian Rosalyn LaPier (Blackfeet/Metis) will visit Helena on Tuesday, March 18 to discuss the importance of preserving traditional ecological knowledge and native plants. She will talk about the native plants of the Northern Plains, their medicinal and edible uses, American Indian health and wellbeing, and the use of important plants, such as tobacco. Her presentation will be engaging and interactive with colorful photos of native plants and dried specimens to look at. The audience will learn the role these plants played within American Indian societies and perhaps how to incorporate native plants within their home gardens and yards. The presentation starts at 7:00 p.m. in the gym of the Leo Pocha Clinic. The presentation is free and open to the public. Come for evening of learning and sharing. And please bring a friend! This program is made possible with the generous support the Helena Indian Alliance. LaPier has been a faculty member for the University of Montana Environmental Studies program since the fall of 2012, She spent more than 20 years learning Blackfeet ethnobotany and ecological knowledge from her late maternal grandmother, Annie Mad Plume Wall. An enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana, LaPier grew up primarily on the Blackfeet reservation, east of Glacier Park. She also spent significant time throughout the entire Northwest as a child, with her mother and relatives who were migrant farmworkers. With a commitment to national and international nonprofit work for 20 years, LaPier strives to preserve tribal languages, history and traditional ecological knowledge. She serves as a member on the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council Learn more at Continued on PAGE 7.

7 Page CULTIVATE BIOLITERACY SERIES The Cultivate BioLiteracy Series is a program of Cultivate Helena, Inc. to bring groundbreaking authors, speakers, films and other enlightening educational events to the Helena community during the gardening off -season. The 2014 series kicks off on March 11 with Janisse Ray, author of The Seed Underground at the Lewis and Clark Library. (see previous press releases) March 18, Rosalyn LaPier, ethnobotanist and University of Montana professor in the Environmental Studies Program, will talk about the importance of tobacco to native peoples as a medicinal plant as well as other native plants used by tribes of the northern plains. (See press release above) The next event in the series is a public screening of Symphony of the Soil, a feature length film that explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and sharing the voices of some of the world s most highly esteemed soil scientists, farmers, and activists, the film portrays soil as a protagonist of our planetary story. Understanding the value of soil and how to conserve, and even replenish it, may help solve one of our most pressing environmental problems including climate change, dead zones, water scarcity, and world hunger. Date and location TBA. Details about the other events in the Cultivate BioLiteracy Series are forthcoming and will be posted on QUIT-NOW For more info call Laverne at Ext. 107 Wellbriety Meetings Every Mondays and Saturday at HIA 501 Euclid 6:00-7:30pm For more info: Michael L
