5 The Authors Puja Kanth Alfred I am a Counseling Psychologist and Certified EFT Practitioner. In my 10+ years of therapy experience I have effectively used EFT to resolve emotional and physical problems. I work with clients all over the world with a unique approach called Geo-Specific EFT (Cross-Cultural EFT) that is sensitive to language, culture and religion. 9 What is Stress? Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened whether it is real or imagined. It is the reaction to internal and external factors that surpasses your ability to cope. For example, if you are a cashier then it may be stressful having a long line of customers waiting while for others it may feel as if it s just working time passing by quickly; the individual reactions to any situation vary from person to person. When we are stressed, an automatic response starts in our body to prepare it for emergency. The nervous system responds to stress by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. The heart beat increases, muscles tighten, and the blood pressure rises. This so called fight, flight or freeze response allows you to stay focused in emergency situations, gives you extra strength and sharpens your concentration. Once the threatening situation is over, the body comes back to its natural state of equilibrium. However, when the emergency is still present, the body does not return to its normal state and stays hyper vigilant. Even if the situation causing stress is only imaginary and there is no real danger in the environment the physical reaction of the body is the same. When we experience stress frequently and for longer periods of time, there is a continual elevated cortisol level that is known to contribute to a wide range of physical as well as psychological problems such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, digestive and metabolic problems, obesity and many more. Stress has a threefold impact in the workplace - emotional, physical and behavioural. Unfortunately, that is exactly what is happening to many people in today s business world. While most are not experiencing any life threatening situations, they are struggling with traffic, work load, time pressure, financial problems, and the myriad other stressors of modern work life. A simple example would be that job stress can lead to irritability, anxiety, panic (emotional), elevated blood pressure (physical) and frequent anger outbursts at home and in office (behavioural). Physical and emotional issues can lead to frequent absenteeism & poor performance that can have a direct impact on the productivity of the company.
