Feasible First Steps
DHH Infusion Team Karen Putz Stephanie Olson Candace Lindow-Davies Starting and maintaining a chapter can be daunting all by itself. But the benefits of DHH Adult Role Model infusion is so important to the success of a chapter that it just can t wait. Come learn from two experienced women how to create a strong argument for why your chapter needs to start identifying, recruiting, and building a program. Participants will walk away with concrete plug and play ideas to put to use immediately and at low cost. Tap your community, harness your social media, and get ready to reap the benefits!
Who is in the Audience? Parent Leaders who have a DHH Adult Program in your EHDI system Parent Leaders who want to have a DHH Adult Program in your system? Professionals? Mentors/Role Models/DHH Guides or Coordinators of a DHH Program? Parents?
What is Deaf and HH Infusion Hands & Voices recognizes the importance of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) individuals with diverse languages, modes of communication, ages, education, and life experiences in all aspects of the organization. This diversity provides a valuable resource to families with deaf and hard of hearing children, enabling them to interact with peers and adults who embrace the Hands & Voices philosophy of non-biased support.
What is the FL3? Family Leadership in Language and Learning The goal is to provide support, resources, and information to families with deaf and hard of hearing children identified through newborn hearing screening, with the focus on language, literacy, and social-emotional development.
DHH FL3 Objectives Design supports for meaningful inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing individuals within national, state, and territory EHDI systems. Demonstrate collaboration with deaf-based organization that operate Deaf Mentor programs to learn best practices and to integrate new knowledge into disseminated resources and training curriculums. Develop training and resources for state/territory EHDI system and family to family support organizations to parent with organizations that serve the deaf and hard of hearing community. Support the establishment of Deaf Mentor/Guide/Role Model* programs for families with deaf or hard of hearing infants and children in all states/territories.
Mentors, Guides, and Role Models Terminology: mentors, guides or role models: regardless of terminology training is critical for success this is more than the person you ll meet at the store awareness of stories that will be different than ours "In the beginning I had my story and now after many years with the organization I have many stories and perspectives." Kim Shauer British Columbia H&V Parent
Where Families Find Support
What is it that we desire? Connections with people in all parts of our life-from identification through adulthood Respect and honor for the decision making process Increased family engagement The quest for independence for all children Technology and access in everyday life Opportunities and possibilities; hopes and dreams We all want the same things for DHH kids!
How Do I Even Start? 1. Network 2. Build Relationships 3. Create a Value for DHH Involvement 4. Start on a Small Scale 5. Keep Watch for Opportunities, Partnerships and Financial Support 6. Make Calculated Next Steps 7. Support Diversity 8. Understand bias and the art of sharing stories-training
Where Are the DHH Adults? Deaf Clubs (Deaf Women United, Sports Clubs, Deaf Olympics) Associations (National and state associations of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing) Colleges, Tech Programs & Schools Community Non-Profits Deaf Coffee Gatherings Service providers (AVT Therapists, SLPs, CI Centers, Audiologists, ASL instructors, etc.) Disability Services at colleges Teachers of Deaf/HH who keep in touch with graduates Parents of Adults who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Connecting via Social Media Facebook Groups look for local and national groups, camps, associations, and organizations serving D/HH Adults Search using HASHTAGS: #deaf #hardofhearing Daily searches in Google: Deaf + your town, hard of hearing + news Hands & Voices Blog; Look for diverse DHH adults!
Plug and Play Ideas Serve on Advisory Committees (more than one DHH representing different perspectives) Serve on H&V Boards DHH adults present at or attend H&V Events as MNHV example of H&V League of Heroes (Could start with volunteers who are trained but with the intent they should be paid positions) Use social media to capture inspiring stories of DHH adults and young adults-invite families to find adults in their community to be shared on social media, in local newsletters/newspapers or given to HQ for Communicator or HQ Social media
And More Plug and Play Ideas Create local recognition for DHH Adult game changers or businesses who employ DHH-Families First Award or High Five Award Encourage patronage of deaf-owned businesses or where businesses where deaf are employed using social media or newsletters Create opportunities for students who are DHH to visit deaf owned businesses or job shadow DHH adults-work with school programs to create opportunities Promote establishment of DHH Guides, Adult Role Model and Deaf Mentor programs and help find funding opportunities Your ideas?
Where s the Money???? NCHAM-DHH Adult Involvement Learning Community-Funding tip sheet Move away from the volunteer status into paid, professional positions Become best friends with your state EHDI Coordinator Learn how money is funded in your state Senators and Representatives get to know them Collaborate with existing organizations Community grants Evaluation measures-demonstrate outcomes
