Represents the professional integrative health associations: Some 400,000 small businesses strong National policy efforts aim for patient access to all safe, effective and licensed healthcare providers Led to creation of Section 2706 of the ACA: End discrimination against the licensed providers 2706 created to correct imbalances in the health insurance market: Millions of patients have paid out of pocket for 20+ years; Rapid adoption now in conventional settings Little inclusion by insurers as a result Employers plans unaware of benefits and of Section 2706 = Out of balance

Wayne B. Jonas, M.D., Wayne B. Jonas, M.D., is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Samueli Institute, a non-profit medical research organization supporting worldwide, scientific investigation of healing processes and their application in health and disease. He is a practicing family physician, Professor of Family Medicine at Georgetown University and at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a retired United States Army Medical Corps Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Jonas is known widely for advocacy and research that has resulted in the introduction of integrative medicine approaches into the care provided by the military and Veterans Affairs to address the needs of service members, other veterans, retirees, and their families. Among those approaches are acupuncture, mind body practices, yoga, and therapeutic massage. Also of note have been his efforts to support the creation of wellbeing for individuals and communities upstream from and designed to preclude the need for individuals to enter the chronic care system.

Samueli Institute Uncovers the Science of Healing THROUGH FOR TO RESEARCH INNOVATION EDUCATION INDIVIDUALS ORGANIZATIONS COMMUNITIES Improve performance Achieve and maintain wellness Reduce chronic symptoms
RESEARCH & EVALUATION Self-care Therapies for Chronic Pain In a special issue to Pain Medicine, Samueli Institute examines the evidence-base for nonpharmaceutical solutions to pain management, with a focus on active, self-care complementary and integrative medicine options including mind-body, physically-oriented and sensory art therapies. Using Samueli Institute s systematic review process, the expert panel recommends which self-care modalities may be most effective for different types of pain. Yoga, tai chi and music therapies have most compelling studies supporting them, with music therapy best among them all.
RESEARCH & EVALUATION Towards a Systems Model of Resilience The October 2014 issue of Interface Focus, a journal of the Royal Society, the national Academy of science in the United Kingdom, explores Samueli Institute s efforts to look beyond the traditionally siloed way of studying resilience and instead looks at how the whole system contributes to how individuals and societies respond and recover from traumatic experiences. The special issue tackles misconceptions of resilience and expands our understanding to include the growth that can come from the struggle to cope with trauma.
RESEARCH & EVALUATION Nutritional Armor: Omega-3 for the Warfighter A recent Military Medicine supplement is a small window into the work being done by Samueli Institute and others to build an evidence base for the benefits of foods, nutrients and dietary supplements for warfighters. The work is based on the findings of a panel of experts convened by Samueli Institute and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to review the optimal fatty acids for military service members. The panel unanimously asserts that a military Daily Recommended Intake for omega-3 fatty acids should be established while also working to lower current intakes of omega-6s.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE SUPPORTING OPTIMAL HEALING ENVIRONMENTS All aspects of an optimal healing environment physical, emotional, spiritual, behavioral and environmental support and stimulate health, productivity and healing. The OHE framework was developed with input from scientists, practitioners, corporate and community members as a guide to science-based delivery of health promotion, productivity and healing behaviors.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE Become an Optimal Healing Environment Through the 360 OHE Inventory Samueli Institute provides a comprehensive review of an organization s healing practices to create a clear action plan for becoming an Optimal Healing Environment. By identifying the healing-oriented practices in place, perceived priorities at all levels of the organization, and gaps in practice, Samueli Institute can help improve patient care, increase nurse and patient loyalty and increase market share.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE Business Case for OHE Cape Coral Hospital (CCH), a 300-bed hospital in Florida, embedded Samueli Institute s Optimal Healing Environment (OHE) framework into their strategic plan in As a result, the hospital s chief executive has seen an increase in staff engagement and patient satisfaction ratings. CCH also experienced an increase in operating margin of 5.5% in the first year it embraced the OHE framework.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE IMPACT OF AN OPTIMAL HEALING ENVIRONMENT Becoming an Optimal Healing Environment (OHE) is not only important to the health of a hospital s patients but also its financial health and the wellbeing of its employees. In a recent case study of hospitals with a focus on OHE, Valley Hospital in New Jersey reports an increase in operating margin of 9.64% (New Jersey average is 1.06%) and lower nurse turnover rate compared to other hospitals of similar size. The nurse turnover rate is 7.86%, half the rate of other hospitals of a similar size in the northeast region. The yearly savings for this figure add up to more than $2 million for Valley Hospital.
NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE TRAINING Optimizing Healing in Hospitals At a two-day symposium at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital outside Washington, DC, more than 120 leaders and care givers from across the staff received traditional instruction, had the opportunity to participate in yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation instruction as well as receive acupuncture and massage therapy treatments.
NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE TRAINING WELLNESS TRAINING IN MIND-BODY-SPIRIT Samueli Institute teaches a holistic approach to wellbeing through a teaching kitchen and self-care educational program. The curriculum includes training on nutrition, culinary skills, mindfulness and stress reduction, exercise and fitness, and access to a health coach.
NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE TRAINING Optimizing Military Performance
NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE TRAINING Wellbeing at Work Samueli Institute s comprehensive curriculum is also available for the workplace to create sustained lifestyle changes in the areas of nutrition, exercise and mindfulness to improve health, productivity and quality of life. Current clients use the curriculum to move beyond the traditional focus of workplace wellness programs into one that acknowledges the core components of human flourishing. In addition to the teaching kitchen and self-care education program, Samueli Institute also delivers a mindfulness training program that explores the connection between optimizing performance and mind-body skills.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE Improving the nation s health takes more than a big idea. Samueli Institute builds partnerships in health care, worksites, the military and community settings to change a complex and financiallydriven network of care. This systematic collaboration balances the often competing priorities of population health, personal experience and cost.
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE PACKAGING CHANGE FOR A RIPPLE EFFECT IN HEALTH CARE Samueli Institute uses its expertise in the areas of integrative patient-centered care and whole systems learning to tackle key challenges of our health care system and produce system-level change. Solutions scale from a single doctor s office to a large hospital system, allowing measurable, sustainable change to spread throughout the health care system. This change occurs through collaboratives, a team-based approach to problem-solving. Collaboratives combine subject matter expertise with tools and methods to effect change. This science of improvement has been well-established by our partner, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Two areas of focus for the Institute are chronic pain and palliative care.
