2 Tranquillity leads to Clarity Clarity leads to Insight Insight leads to Wisdom Wisdom leads to Freedom Welcome It gives me great pleasure to share with you our 2012 programme of mindfulness-based courses. Having taught meditation over the past five years and benefited from a personal practice dating back over thirty years, I am delighted to see modern science continuing to demonstrate what ancient wisdom has known all along that meditation and mindfulness are beneficial for our health and well-being. Our Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course remains at the heart of what we do and attracts a diverse range of participants from students to parents, corporate directors and healthcare professionals who join for a variety of reasons from simply taking the time to prioritise their well-being to those who wish to adopt a complementary approach to managing health concerns such as anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, IBS, CFS/ME, chronic pain and stress to name but a few. The feedback we receive from those that attend MBSR courses, coupled with a significant growth in media coverage of the benefits of mediation and mindfulness, make this a truly inspiring time to expand our range of courses to incorporate personal, healthcare and professional development. As those of you who have already completed an MBSR course will appreciate mindfulness is very much a journey of self discovery and something which, once discovered, impacts on all areas of our lives. With this in mind, in addition to our regular MBSR courses (p2) we have focused the forthcoming year s programme on three areas: The Development of Personal Practice (p3), Mindfulness in Healthcare (p4) and Mindfulness in the Workplace (p5) We are now also offering supervision for those working in Healthcare, alongside a range of professional development workshops providing a more in depth understanding of the research, neuroscience and practice of mindfulness. With increasing evidence of the enrichment mindfulness can offer in terms of creativity, productivity, emotional intelligence and engagement, mindfulness is making its way into the workplace. If this is something that is of interest to you then do join us for a workshop or contact us to discuss bespoke organisational training. It is my hope that as more of us begin to realise that taking an active approach to looking after our mind is as essential to our health and well-being as exercise and diet we will find ourselves living in a period of true transformation. 3 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) As well as promoting general well-being, mindfulness offers us the opportunity to use the power of our mind to face stress, pain or illness. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a structured group programme which teaches mindfulness and meditation as an effective and dependable counter-balance to the stresses of life. Our course is based upon the work of Dr Jon Zabat-Zinn, our own work and other leading authorities in the world of neurobiology and meditation. Research and delegates completing our MBSR courses report benefits including: - A greater capacity for relaxation and calmness - Better coping with the effects of chronic illness - Improved self efficacy, resourcefulness and resilience - Less worry, anxiety and depression - More energy and enthusiasm - Enhanced emotional control - More self-confidence - Enhanced creativity - Better quality sleep This course exceeded my expectations, both in the therapeutic value of MBSR and in my interest in the subject. COURSE OVERVIEW Meditation has many stereotyped images but the course teaches it in a very practical way making it accessible and understandable for everyone. Participants on the courses are encouraged to build and develop sustainable and practical mindfulness skills supported by an understanding of the interplay between biological, sociological and psychological aspects of well-being. MBSR has changed my life; I believe in it and am committed to maintaining it as part of my lifestyle. Each session, backed by sound scientific research and presented in an easy to understand format, covers different forms of mindfulness meditation practice. Well-being Day Spend a day with our specialists in Mind, Nutrition and Exercise with informative seminars and practical exercises lead by Tracy Land, Jason Feavers and Robert Broughton. Mindful Relationships Workshop* Relationships provides ideal opportunities for personal transformation leading to a deeper and more meaningful life where we can be authentic, loving and present even with those closest to us! Emotional Tolerance Workshop* We are often inadvertently encouraged to suppress our emotions. However they underpin our perceptions and approach to life. Mindfulness gives us the opportunity to work skilfully with our emotions and to see ourselves transform as we invite them in to our lives. MBSR Day Retreats* An opportunity to relax and refresh whilst giving yourself space to practice the meditation techniques taught during our MBSR course in a peaceful environment with the support of Robert and other course colleagues. Graduate Meditation Group* Continue cultivating your meditation practice by joining other MBSR Graduates at our weekly meditation group. Tuesday evenings pm in York ( 5 per session). 6 Mindfulness in the Workplace As organisations grapple with unprecendeted change uncertainty is often now the norm in workplaces leading to an increase in stress which has been shown to be detrimental to productivity, interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, physical and mental health. The need for organisations to remain competitive in such a demanding climate alongside the risk of litigation for employers is prompting organisations to take a more proactive approach to employee well-being and organisational effectiveness. In addition to MBSR's use worldwide as a succesful healthcare intervention more recent scientific research has focussed on the influence meditation can have on the actual structure of our brain, demonstrating increased grey matter in areas of the brain important in decision making, learning, memory and emotional regulation. This has led to mindfulness meditation being introduced in a number of forward thinking organisations such as Google, Barclays, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, KPMG, the US marines and Transport for London as an effective way of improving performance and resilience. One of the MBSR course s key strengths is the breadth of its impact on organisational effectiveness, with increasing evidence of benefits in areas such as - Leadership, team relationships and collaboration - Improved cognitive functioning such as better concentration, memory, decision-making and learning ability - Improved resilience to stress - Increased job satisfaction and engagement - Attendance/absence management A recent study by Transport for London (TfL) found that incorporating a mindfulness course into their workplace lead to significant reductions in absence rates amongst participants ( 71% reduction in relation to stress, anxiety and depression over the subsequent three years). Qualitative improvements were also reported with 80% of participants reporting improvements in their relationships, 79% improvements in their ability to relax, 64% improvements in sleep patterns and 53% improvements in happiness at work. Another study showed reductions in error rates and attributed the errors being made, not to a lack of knowledge or skills but to poor quality thinking and decision making.
